Thought the film was amazing to look at but the story was dreadful as was the script. It was a little too Disney for my taste and the chanting scene was simply painful to watch. It was all way too long with the final war scene not really giving any thrills because it was all so predictable and took too long to get there, by which point I couldn't of cared less who would win (not like that was too hard predict). Great to look at but ultimately it was like watching Butterflies come out of James Cameron's a*se with each one waving an american flag and him with an enormous grin on his face and the dollar sign in his eyes. What happened to this guy?! When pretty much every magazine, newspaper and website gave the film 5 stars and it got nominated for tons of awards, I really had lost any hope for Hollywood to change. It was like everyone gave into the Hollywood pap we've all come to complain about and despise and yet this prime example is loved by all because of the pipe dream gimmick that is 3D. I wonder how many people bought it on DVD and fell asleep? I wonder if the 3D never existed, whether the critics would have liked it as much? I'm pretty sure they would all still be enjoying their brand new fur coats. Give it time and everyone will realise their mistake of liking Avatar and it'll become remembered like Titanic... "overrated balls".

I didn't watch this in the cinema because I expected it to be over-hyped crap.
I watched it for the first time a couple of months ago and I wouldn't say it was "crap" but I would say that it is average at best.
The main downsides for me were that the story was boring and unoriginal, it dragged for about an hour longer than necessary and it continued after a point that would have made for a much better ending (when the tree falls - "Sooner or later, though, you have to wake up."). Aside from leaving a few ends untied, I thought that would have been a great ending.
The good points for me were that it looked pretty great and Michelle Rodriguez' character died. That's always good.

I think it's more a case of us always having the same arguments. I refuse to stand idly by while everyone gives Jim Cameron a kicking. Well deserved though it might be for the lazy script, there are a lot of genuinely useless film-makers helming big budget movies these days more deserved of it.

Insert JJ Abrams example here ( ) so Mr Silly can get another Fortunesfool keyring

My keys are looking pretty blinged out as it is. And what you say about other useless filmmakers, you won't find many people who will defend them as great. I don't know anyone who'd legitimately defend Abrams (do I get a keyring if I mention him myself in response to you?) nor Bay, nor McG, nor LeTerrier, and so on so forth. With Cameron there are genuine defenders, and that baffles me. I agree with teh comments on him being the greatest second unit director, because in terms of set pieces they sure as some fine creations, but then looking at narrative and everything that isn't a goddamn set piece and it all falls apart. Many of his films to my mind managed on the back of an admittedly strong concept, while the developing of that concept tends to fall a little flat. Heck, with Aliens he already had all the important bits set up for him with an entire movie which did it perfectly, it would've taken something special to mess that up.

Default I didn't enjoy it!

I found it one of the most boring, overlong, overblown and terrible films I have ever seen. Sure it looked great, but it was an awful film.

Im with the fool, while I dont perhaps like it as much, it was a spectacle that I have not seen in the cinema for some time. Cameron has his faults, and plenty of them, but for Blockbuster directors, and he is one of them, he cant be beaten I reckon, there are better Directors out there for sure, but when it comes to action on a grand scale he gets my vote everytime.
