I am not to sure how they are doing now but a few years ago I went on an asian invasion and found a few gems and a few have became mainstream since. Old boy and ong bak. The host (KOR) is a fantastic film and I rate it a lot more than cloverfield. I'm a cyborg and thats ok was a little unsettling but I enjoyed it.

Down in the Valley is a great film, I don't remember a general release and noone ever mentions that. I also liked transsiberian with woody harrelson. It has a hitchcock suspension feel to it and at really does sucker you into I can't believe you trust her storyline.

Default "Mr. Roberts"

This one is from a bygone era of post-WWII and features a truly Old Hollywood stellar cast of fabulous actors at their peak: Henry Fonda; William Powell; Jack Lemmon; Jimmy Cagney; supporting actor Ward Bond.

It deals with light-hearted and humorous things set in the outskirts of the War in the Pacific, so it's referred to, not immersing you in grimness. It deals with personal strength and character, and delivers how Post-War audience dealt with loss.

I showed it to my two kids (19 + 22) and they both liked it and were affected by it.

After reading this, I looked the film up. I went to HMV the next day and picked it up for £3. Worth every penny. all I need now is hypnotherapy and a big red stapler and I'll be set for life. So thanks for bigging that one up.

I forgot to mention Its all gone pete tong. I love everything about that film especially the "coke badger"

Some great films suggested in this topic. Here's an article a few of us Film Fans on wordpress put together a while back.

Some proper gems in there.

Thanks

Cheers guys! I've had Office Space sitting in my DVD collection for a couple of years without getting round to watching it. Finally succeeded last night because of your discussions. Nice touch.

This would be mine too, but to keep this list going I'm gonna say....

American Movie. One of my all time favorite, unsung herfhero cinema. unless you've seen it of course and then you know what im talking about. This film did get a lot of critical success and maybe is not such a hidden gem, but if anyone ever asks me for a film recommendation, and i've already given them Office Space, American Movie is next on the list.

Check it out if you have not had the pleasure.

My hidden gem would have to be Ang Lee's version of the Hulk. I champion the film to whoever will listen but appear to be the only person in the world who likes it. I too, was initially unimpressed the first time I watched it but one night during an unfathomably hot summer a few years ago I put on the DVD to send me to sleep. I got into it and silly killer mutant poodles notwithstanding, felt thoroughly satisfied by the end.

What kept me involved was the peformances of the actors. They all seemed to have wholeheartedly bought into Lee's vision, at times producing an almost theatrical feel to proceedings. Despite what other people say I salute the over scientific approach to the Hulk's origin; I salute the Bruce/David Banner storyarc; I salute the spellbinding cinematography/editing and I definitely salute the CGI Hulk which WAS impressive for the time and much more believable than a bodybuilder covered in green paint.

I accept that I am in the minority, however I truly feel that most of the film's criticisms stem from the fact that people expected to see Bill Bixby running around shouting "don't make angry" instead of a psychological study-cum-suspenseful thriller. I say, "Leave Hulk alone!" and give credit to what I maintain to be a 4-star-standard example of hard work done by extremely talented individuals.

All well and good but the film is still heavy handed and not very convincing. I love Ang Lees work especially Ride With The Devil and Lust Caution but he was never the right choice for The Hulk. I assume you have seen the newer Hulk starring Ed Norton ? This is a far better version and more consistent with the character as portrayed in the comics, which essentially is what you want from a movie like this. the CGI is better, the action far superior and in fact so is the acting.
sorry but yes it does seem you are the only one who likes it.
