Dude, you cannot be serious, that film is cinematic gold encrusted with diamonds! Fairplay if you just don't get it but to call it "pretentious tripe" is below the belt. |

Um... No its accurate. The amount of undeserved praise this film gets is unbelievable. It ranks up there with Hidden as the most overhyped load of tosh in cinema.
The plot is needlessly convoluted and in places so disjointed that it makes no sense. Its over the top where it shouldnt be and just not anywhere near as good as it could have been given a tighter re-write of the script. Im not a casual film watcher. I have a very good knowledge of film and I know how easy it is for a film to become a cult classic given enough hype.Even when it is an average movie at best ( "cough" Star Wars ) and I honestly think that the amount of kudos Fight Club gets is ridiculous. Be honest. Its NOT that good.

I agree, me and my dad came out of the cinema looked at each other and said 'what a load of **** that was', how this film has so much praise is beyond me, I got bored with it half way through and if it had been on dvd I would have switched it off.

It's true it is one of the most hyped films of recent times. Along with Donnie Darko. And while it's not a bad film, the fanboy/critical adoration it receives seems highly ironic given that its singular message seems to be Think for yourself as an Indivdual, Don't be dictated to by Consumerism or social mores. and Beat each other up so you can feel macho and edgy.
what's the bet most of the young dudes idolising the mentality of this film would sob like a baby if they so much as stubbed their toe? |

Ok Hendrix youve heard why we dislike it. Would you like to tell us just why you think its so good?
Ive a sneaking suspicion that a lot of its fans like it because either.. A. Its got Brad Pitt in it and he fights, innit. B. They are media grad students who have fallen for the hype. C. They dont understand it either but have been told "Well Its Cool ,Innit" by their mates.

I actually like Fight Club. I think it's got a lot to offer. What spoils it, however, is that dreadful performance by Pitt, who I still maintain, cannot act to save his little life.

I too enjoy Fight Club, its certainly not a Modern Classic. Its true also what Jonesy says, although I will say he is better here than he has ever been, but when talking about Pitts acting that isnt saying much.

Eh, it was over-rated, but not horrible. The book is awesome though.

I loved the film. I like Brad Pitt. The kind of hype and praise the film got wasn't manufactured in a back office somewhere by the devil and his minions, it came from the street...from people. I can't see how that's undeserved, however much your opinion differs from most. And yea, be yourself, don't follow the horde, and all that tosh, but we're all products of our time, and sometimes something's going to come along and grab a whole bunch of people who happen to be attuned to this sort of thing, and it'll twist their nipples just the way they like it; should we turn our noses up at something that genuinely appeals jusy because we're not alone in thinking so? I don't care. Obviously there isn't an answer. That wasn't even the question. Modern classic or overrated tripe? I think it'll be considered a classic in time to come, so if that's what make a modern classic, that's the side I'm coming down on. I think some might overrate it, too, and others underrate it, but it ain't tripe! Innit.
