According to a certain movie mag Joss Whedon is writing the script for the proposed Avengers movie.
Given Whedons chequered past ( shows cancelled as well as his successes ) is this a good move ? Personally I cannot think of a more qualified person to do the lob. Whedon is a comic book master and despite a few bad breaks in the past in my mind this should be sensational.

I've never been a fan of Whedon. Can't recall a single thing of his that I'd class above "alright, nothing special".
A great big Meh to that announcement/rumour. |

Oh come ON. Firefly & Serenity were just about as good as Sci-Fi gets. Buffy was groundbreaking ( even if you didn't like it ) and in the writing department youv'e got Toy Story 2 and his brilliant run in the X-Men comics.
Genius ? probably not but he is certainly more than up to the task of The Avengers.

Sorry, no for Serenity and wasn't all that fussed with Firefly. Didn't know he had writing credits for Toy Story 2, thought he was only involved in the first. Even then, that film had so many writers that it'd be difficult to ascertain how much of it is to his credit.
As for Buffy, that was one show that I never got. Ever. How was it groundbreaking? I'm genuinely interested, I tried and always failed to see what all the fuss was about. Don't really read that many comics so I can't say I've read his work there. Still, the man wrote Alien Resurrection. That itself is worthy of some special kind of crucifixion. |

Alien Resurrection....not that good but Whedon did publicly complain that his original script was altered and played around with so much that he nearly disowned it. Toy Story..it could have been the first one he scripted Im not a huge fan of either.
Buffy was a totally new way of portraying TV heroines. She was a youth symbol who kicked ass and for a tv series at that time to have such consistent plotting and characterisation was very unusual. Buffy paved the way for a lot of TV series to come. It got stations to sit up, take notice and invest in long term projects again. It also became a true cult series. You can't really knock it for that. oh and you are definately wrong about Firefly/Serenity. Anyway even if you disregard his film and tV stuff his work for Marvel comics has been outstanding and on that note alone he is a great choice to script what should be the ultimate (see the in joke there ) superhero movie.

Whedon is a good thing, 'Serenity' proves he has the chops to direct a picture like 'Avengers', his writing is proven from that stand point also.
But disregarding it's Firefly origins, Serenity is a well paced, funyn and at times moving sci-fi actioner, witty dialogie and suspensful scenes in abundance. Although it's difficult for me to come at it from an unbiased point of view, mind you I didn't like Buffy, Angel or Dollhouse, well Dollhouse was average. Screw it lets get John Milius out of retirement! |

Im gonna ruffle some feathers and say bad, really bad. Whedon is fine on TV, I liked Buffy and Angel even more, what I thought was total pants was Serenity it felt like a pilot, I know it was from Firefly I just found it ever so amateur. I cant really think of anyone worse than Whedon, The Avengers needed a Director who has wrangled that many threads and characters before, not some two-bit Tv hack*
