I enjoy his performance, its one of the best parts of the film for me. Im not saying its good acting, its over blown and utterly insane, but I cant help enjoy it. I know you are a man who enjoys the more subtle side of acting, I do too normally, I just find myself smiling when I watch it.
I agree about Diaz, she can act, but here its just wrong. For me the biggest problem of the film is its clumsy, poor editing and a rushed and muddled ending, its also packed with obvious images, e.g. The Bible being thrown in the river in super slow mo, yes we get it, Amsterdam Vallon has no love for God, enough already.

It might be fluff but it's enjoyable fluff. I watched it again last night and the story bears repeat viewing. It's a great interplay with actors like Walken, Hanks and Sheen onboard too.
It would fit under Dude's good old fashioned fun movies.

I genuinely believe that history will mark Leo as one of the true greats. He is a titan of the screen and has made very few wrong choices in terms of the films that he has made. Critters 3 can't count as a 'bad choice', as all actors have to start somewhere!

'This boys life' remains one of my favourite films and at the tender age of 18, he rivals the great De-Niro as the true star of this film. In the same year, Gilbert Grape proved his dexterity in taking on a role that could have really, really gone wrong for a lesser actor.

As for his 'early twenties films', they put his name on the map so I can't really criticise - they served a purpose for him. Anyway, since then he has been selecting his films with increasing confidence and precision. I do agree that he may have mis-cast in Gangs of new york - i'd have preferred a more 'rough around the edges' actor to play the character of Amsterdam Vallon. Even so, his performance was a decent one.

Following from this, the Aviator, the Departed and Shutter Island have proved him to be amongst the very finest Actors in the world.

He was also in a recent film called Inception that you might have missed, in which he played an ok part despite some terrible direction........ ;-) Yeah right....this is the film that sticks the cherry on the cake for me. His performance was utterly outstanding. In a cast with other top notch performances he still stood head and shoulders above the rest. The only downside to his appearance in this film is he's going to have to be extraordinarily canny in order to find another movie that is worthy of such high praise (as you can tell - i liked it a lot!)

So all in all a tremendous actor who will surely win an Oscar in the not too distant future. It would be a crime for the Academy not to award him this honour at some point!

Thus ends the Dicaprio 'love-in'.

I'll give you that!

You've given me a good thread idea though. Good comedies that would have been rubbish with great actors:

i.e - Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Marlon Brando and Leonardo Di Caprio.

The problem I have with DiCaprio is that I never forget that he is Leonardo DiCaprio when watching a movie (I hope that makes sense). During the dinner scenes in Django Unchained I even caught myself thinking 'why is DiCaprio doing Jack Sparrow' once. Hats off to him not breaking character after smashing the glass though, that was nice (and likely pretty painful) work.

I don't doubt his ability and dedication, but there's always something slightly off. I can't put my finger on it.
