Default The casual racism of the 80s and other wacky prejudices.

Ok I know I shouldn't, it's wrong and I'm adamant that I'm laughing in an ironic way, hopefully in a Trey Parker/Matt Stone chic. But the casual prejudices of the 80s make me snigger uncomfortably at the blatant bigotry some films have.

For Instance was re-watching 'The Stuff' and nearly spat out my tea when the little Sammy Davis Jr clone called 'Chocolate Chip Charlie' popped up on a mission of dessert fuelled industrial espionage.

I immediately had Sammy Davis Jr flashbacks to 'Cannonball Run' and the adventures of 'The Chocolate Monk'.

But then I bamboozled my mind with a myriad of racial and ethnic stereotypes littered through out cinema, some make me laugh uncomfortably, some even I admit are just wrong.

The two above are most probably wrong as both jokes were probably considered acceptable rather than a satirical reflection of attitudes of the day, which is a damning representation of how Hollywood saw itself.

Poor Davis Jr, he had that crap a long time of that prat Sinatra and co.

Anyone else think of shocking celluloid events, that you only now realise are pretty shameful?

Does 'Allo Allo' count?

White Chicks, is it racist or just taking the pee out of white women? What would it be like the other way round, two white blokes get dressed up as two black women? Some people will find it funny others will find it racist.

You probably won't remember the 70's sitcom Love thy Neighbour? It had a white man calling his black neighbour sambo, but what it was really showing was the ignorance of the white bloke. My black friends found it hilarous, even today they still say how funny they found it.

70's TV was superbly suspect. It 'Aint 'Arf Hot Mum was one of the dodgiest, and not surprisingly, you never see re-runs.

Depends which Mr Jackson, if it was Samuel L Jackson he could get away with it.

Default The Expendables

Jet Li's character in the Expendables was called Ying Yang or Ching Chang or something. It's not a major plotpoint, but still, it is 2010.

Default RE. Casual predjudice in movies/Allo allo

Just to come in on the point of does Allo allo, count. There was the documentary called `comedy connecions a while back on BBC and this point was raised & put to many of those envolved with the show. "The aim of the show was to take the p*iss out of war films"; this was a direct quote from the actor Gordon Kaye, who starred in this show.
