Hello everyone, this is my first post and I thought I'd start by getting the low down of what you think of the magnificent Coens. Here's my list.
1. Barton Fink. 2. The Man Who Wasn't There. 3. The Big Lebowski. 4. Miller's Crossing. 5. Blood Simple. 6. No Country For Old Men. 7. Fargo. 8. Raising Arizona. 9. Burn After Reading. 10. The Hudsucker Proxy. I do like O Brother Where Art Thou but certainly don't love it, I have seen A Serious Man just the once and really need to watch it again, Intolerable Cruelty and The Lady Killers are meant to be weaker efforts and I haven't seen either. Oh and in the new year, they return with a remake of True Grit starring Matt Damon. |

I have tried watching Fargo, Burn after reading and No country for old men but found them really boring so I switched them off. This has put me off of watching any of their other films. One day I will get round to watching The Big Lebowski as quite a lot of the forumites on here rave about it.

Well that's a pretty comprehensive list. My favourites are The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple and O Brother Where Art Thou?. I think The Hudsucker Proxy ,despite not being one of their more well received films is actually funny and entertaining. The majority of their output is excellent. You should give A Serious Man another watch as soon as possible. It's one of the better releases I've seen over the past couple of years.

Fargo, Hudsucker (very under valued in my op), No Country, Big Lebowski and O Brother for me. The Coens are a bit hit and miss, but when they're on form, their films are hugely entertaining and in some respects, iconic.

'The Big Lebowski' conquers all!
I can take or leave most of the Coens' films to be honest, I do like 'Fargo' and 'No country..', the rest I'm fairly indifferent to. But 'Lebowski' has the endless re watchability of a modern day classic. Where as 'Burn After reading' and some of the later stuff is, dare I say it, a bit Coen by numbers and once you get past Brad Pitt dancing in lycra, it's really quite bland.

For me, the Coen Bros. topic starts with these four:
Blood Simple Barton Fink Fargo Miller's Crossing DGMW, I an a HUGE Lebowski fan, and I find it among the most watchable of their films, but that's not always the same as the best. The four above, to me, are stand-alone brilliant from start to finish with hardly a false note - they are singular examples of their respective genres, artistic AND creative. Rounding out my top 10: Hudsucker Proxy No Country For Old Men The Man Who Wasn't There O Brother, Where Art Thou? Raising Arizona |
