Default Fav Coen Bros film

Definitely has to include Raising Arizona, Burn After Reading and No Country For Old Men. Burn After Reading is one of those movies that leaves you thinking "WTF!" scene after sceen since it is so obviously insane! Esp that toy he had built for his wife!! Haha - had my ex-husband only as been as thoughtful we might still be together!

The expression on Brad Pitt's face when he comes out of the cupboard is hilarious too. I had to rewind that bit first time I watched it.

I have to say The coen brothers are my favourite director(s)

My favourite films in order are...

O brother where art thou?

Fargo

No country for old men

The big Lebowski

The Hudsucker proxy(very **********, a great film)

Blood simple

The man who wasn't there

Raising Arizona

Miller's crossing

Burn after reading

Intolerable cruelty

Barton Fink

The ladykillers(why did they need to remake this?)

A serious man( a really poor film, very disappointed)

Looking forward to True Grit now.Lets hope it doesn't go the same way as the ladykillers and its rubbish(the trailer looks good though)

Red face Coen Bros

Oh dear! Just reading through everyone's lists, I'm afraid my ignorance is showing
Have just added a loada dvds to my screenclick list, to further my education.
My favourite Coen Bros movie, is without a doubt, Fargo, which I have watched umpteen times and have yet to tire of. I know the consensus about Intolerable Cruelty, but I really enjoyed that too and have watched it more than once.
I turned O Brother Where Art Thou off after 20 minutes (which I have done with a film, maybe twice in my whole life!) and can't bring myself to go back to it.
A Serious Man was great. Ladykillers: muck.
And all the really classic ones like Miller's Crossing, the Big L and the Man who Wasn't There are the ones I have yet to see....
Oh and I enjoyed Burn after Reading at the time, but it's not a classic, for me.

Default Fargo

As I am now going through a Frances McDormand phase (reason still unknown), It seemed only logical that I watch Fargo, the movie she won her Oscar for. So, I did, suprisingly.
And it was great; brilliant, brutal, full of small town charm and large scale ideas, a superbly structured and executed drama. I would have given it 5 out of 5. Emphasis on the would.
As later on, when I was reading up on the film, I discovered they marketed it as a comedy. A dark comedy at that, but still a comedy. Never in all my life (now, that said, I'm not old but I have watched a lot of movies) have I seen a less funnier comedy that had been so well reviewed. I tried think of a moment in the film that raised any form of laugh (chuckle, titter, giggle, etc) but seriously, there is nothing in the slightest worth laughing at. It is simply not funny.
The only reason for writing this review is to translate my annoyance at the realisation this is Coens trying to be funny. Dear god, if this what they think is funny, I'd say they are most boring people in the world, scary even.
Fargo, a devastation....

If you think Fargo is unfunny you should watch their other so called comedy Brother Where Art Thou. Its total crap.

I found it funny, especially Buscemi and Stormare. Stomare's glazed expression and random acts of extreme violence raise many a smile without any genuine laugh out loud moments.

I just like all the language and idiosyncrasies of small town Americana that bubble to the surface, William H Macy and increasingly irate car salesman to the silly accents, eh Margey?

A lot of the Coens output is over rated for my money, but 'Fargo' has genuine charm, agree that 'O Brother..' is a little much and does really entice me into ever watching it again.

'Fargo' though stands up well to repeat viewings.

I havent seen their latest comedy output but burn after reading was ridiculously poor.
With Fargo, whats mostly seen as 'funny' is misinterpreted charm. 127 hours had James Franco at charming best, suprisingly though I didnt find it all that funny....
