Default Best significant 80's films

Hey all, just joined the forum...

Watching Less Than Zero ( again ) at the mo'.. Made me wonder, just what are the definitive 80's cult films ( as being prime examples of eighties pop culture ). Breakfast club, St Elmo's, the lost boys, the goonies ( for the younger gen ) ... not genre films, but just the essence of the time.

what do you watch when you want to get a bit 80's?

I think everyone knows that the holy trinity of cinema in the 1980's was Predator, Die Hard and Robocop.

well. thats my point. obviously some absolute cinematic gems as lethal weapon, commando, short circuit ( 1 and 2 ), all the police academy films.. came out in that period of cinematic heaven.

but what really encaptures the essence of the decade?

not Tango and Cash, thats for sure

However, you have a good point with regards to Predator. that worked in the 80's. really good action film. but the subsequent franchises have all sucked balls and i think that is because it worked at the time,, not now.

I watched Predators yesterday, and it was f@ckin' lame.. not Paul Anderson lame, but really bad. not even the ref to Dutch helped. it is lost in its inability to recreate itself.. and always will be

Tiddler, welcome to the forum.

If you've got something to add, just edit your posts rather than repeat posting, otherwise it looks as if you're talking to yourself.

As for the idea of best significant 80s films, it's rather a contradiction, isn't it, bearing in mind that the 80s was the worst decade for film?

Being a massive fan of everything 80's, mainly because I spent some of the best years of my life in the 80's, like leaving school, going to work for the first time, going to clubs, meeting women, I like to watch or listen to stuff from those wonderful big haired shoulder padded days to bring back some good memories.

I think the films that sum up the 80's for me are stuff like weird science, commando, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Robocop, Rocky 3 & 4. Nothing too serious that you have to think about as the 80's was about having fun and not taking life too seriously. How could I take life seriously when I had a hairstyle like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon

That's something I would keep quiet about, if I was you, jaykay.
