Just finished watching Tom Hanks film, Big. It was always a film I really enjoyed as a kid. Heartwarming story of a boy who is turned into a man only to learn the true value of his precious, fleeting youth with some mishaps and comedy along the way. Watched with a more cynical point of view it's actually a pretty depressing film. I spent the entire movie grieving with the boys poor mother. From her point of view this film would have been no kiddie comedy, but a downbeat hostage flick. As far as she knows her son is being held captive for a month! There,'s one scene where the best mate talks to the mum which kind of glosses over how she must feel( Yeah, He'll be back real soon) but She's basically ignored for a whole film in which she should rightly be a central character. Then to make matters worse, at the end of the film the two best friend are walking down their street together like everything is normal and happy again. But he has to pretend to his mum for the rest of his life that he was kidnapped...that's not normal. Also, he's been bedded by a 30 year old which is wrong in so many other ways.
Sorry for the really stupid rant but it annoyed me since I watched it.Any other films that would be so different seen from the point of view of a non central character? Last edited by Lizhawkins; 04-04-2011 at 10:55 AM. Reason: Spaced out title and added apostrophe |

Hostels probably just another day at work from the jailers point of view.

Didn't his mrs go back to being a teenager at the end of Big? It's one of those films where I always get confused about the end. Like Fight Club, I coulda sworn the 'other' character was the one who made it.
The Matrix from the point of view of the machines? In fac, The Terminator from the same perspective! |

If you stop and think how Helena Bonham Carter's character in 'Fight Club' must see the events of the film, it really must be a total mind fuck for her.
I quite like the contrasting perspectives in 'The Hurt Locker' as well, the youngest of the bomb squad especially and how he sees Jeremy Renner's character and gives him a four letter send off at the end (One of my favourite bits!)as he becomes totally exasperated to breaking point with Renner's cowboy attitude.

I have always loved Big and had a major crush on Elizabeth Perkins ever since, how I wished I had been kidnapped by her and been shown the ways of the world

One of mine was Kim Cattrall in Mannequin.
And Joey Lauren Adams in Chasing Amy. Though I was about 22 at the time. |

hey,
i was just watching Big and i thought to myself, when josh turned into an adult he was 12 and whilst he was an adult he has sex with Susan, so does this mean that he was 12 or 30 when he lost his virginity? ;-)
