Its certainly not going to be universally adored and lauded but I did enjoy it. Friends views have ranged from "best film in years" to "pretty boring".
There were some bits when it went a bit too mental for me, but I did feel immersed enough that the icky blood bits really sent a chill down my spine. The black swan dance was ace. |

The first rule about ballet club is you do not talk about ballet club!
Managed to treat myself to a trip to the cinema, my first since 'Inception' and I was pleasantly surprised at this film. Portman is practically a one woman show with the minor characters bordering on peripheral scenery, the camera never leaves her for long, a real tour de force of a performance. A fascinating film I didn't know an awful lot about beyond awards hype and was caught unaware by the various horror elements in the film, from the cheap surprises to the visceral body horror metaphors of Portman's descent into the 'dark side'. Made me squirm and wince more than I'd like to admit, I don't do finger nails, crunching, peeling and falling off. Nasty!

Fantastic! Great review Grinch. I definetely think Natalie Portman has the acadamy award in the bag this year, and deservedly so.

Yeah, grand film. Natallie Portman was superb. I would be happy if it does well with the awards tbh, although I also really liked Winters Bone.

I loved it! Portman gives a flawless performance in a near flawless film. Grinch11, your review is spot on and sums up my experience perfectly. It's a dazzling, mesmerising movie that had me glued to the screen, transfixed by the beauty, creativity and sheer energy on display. The choreography is astonishing and we witness this up on stage, meer inches from the dancers, as if performing the ballet ourselves. Aronofsky's ability to immerse you in the moment and transport you to his world is truly marvellous. A best director Oscar would be thoroughly deserved. As for Portman, she too should be making space on her shelf.

No. And Portman is so scrawny in it she's almost unattractive.

I hear that you get to see her bum though, which is nice.
