Glad you enjoyed The Orphanage Roba, I love a really good ghost story. You should give Garden State a whirl at some point, its a far far better movie than given credit for, Natalie Portman is great and the use of the Simon & Garfunkel classic The Only Living Boy In New York makes it a memorable movie experience.

If anyone can recommend a good horror for me it'd be much appreciated. I consider a bit of a myself a horror geek and i'm worried that I may have bled well dry. Im afraid to say that I have seen a lot over the years so the more obscure the suggestion the better. Cheers guys, I know you'll do your best.

I know it mozzie!

And yes Donny, I think I will give Garden State a whirl at some point. Just got back from seeing Black Swan - oh my gosh, what a movie. Natalie Portman is phenomenal! Hope she wins the Oscar. I realise the two films are poles apart but the strength of that performance means I'll check her out in GS.

As for horror, I do love the genre but don't tend to watch a ton of the stuff. Forgetting the obvious ones I'd recommend Audition (sadistic and twisted), Phenomena (telepathicity *is that even a word* with Jennifer Connelly) and Braindead (delightful splatterfest), but chances are you've seen these already.

Roba, I've got to say - I really liked Garden State. I love Natalie Portman. Full stop. Peter Sarsgaard works for me too. I thought the music was pretty cool - I think it's The Shins that feature pretty prominently on the soundtrack. And... I liked Zach Braff too. (sorry Moz)

Phenomena is nuts. I watched it recently and it took me 3 watches to start to appreciate. For recommendations of horror films it has to be Nightbreed, Demons 2 and Martyrs. Please don't watch Garden State. You will hate yourself. Ignore any critical acclaim. It's soulless, hollow and really a big giant waste of your time. Watch Lost in Translation instead. I don't like that much either but Bill Murray's in it.

They are both similar films in the points they try to make and the themes they deal with but Garden State is so wrapped up in its delusion of making some kind of statement about life that it forgets to actually make one and instead just flaps about on the loor like a big crap derivative film student fish. Lost in Translation also tries so hard to achieve substance over style but again is kinda boring. But its got Bill Murray having a big deadpan manopause in it and I like Bill Murray.

Hmm this does involve stepping outside, but the more interesting horror of recent times, in my opinion, is 'Black Swan'.

The more I think about it, the more I think of David Cronenberg.

Either that or hit 'Videodrome' for some wacky James Woods infused Cronenberg joy.

Great analogy, biscuits.

I know Lost in Translation is slow and nothing much happens but I didn't mind it. Bill Murray holds my attention because he's so damn classy and I never got the hate some people had towards Scarlett's character. It's an old fashioned love story where the tale is told through glances and subtle moments rather than rumpy pumpy and extrovert shenanigans. It's pretty to look at with an appropriate soundtrack. Jeff is right, no one does deadpan like Bill. He's brilliant. A true original.

Garden State is another story. So boring that my memory of it is a complete wash, like I was in an isolation tank for 100 mins. And I don't mind Wes Anderson films on the whole ( I know it's not by him, but similar style, quirky and slow moving).

The first time I watched Garden State I couldn't remember any of the plot at all. My brain completely blanked it out. I posted that on here and someone else (can't remember who) said that had happened to them too. It seems to be a film that wants to be forgotten. I watched it again a few weeks ago to jog my memory and it is really uninteresting.

For horror recommends, the Horror Discussion thread is the best place to look. That's where we compare notes on what we've seen and sort the wheat from the chaff. and we discuss foreign horror. 20 pages of insightful wisdom
