Default The Thing (2011)

Hi all,

What is the general consensus about this -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(2011_film)

I, for one, am quite excited, though I have not read a whole lot about it.
It's got a pretty low-key cast, and I would hope that those involved have had a fairly free reign over the film.

Whilst everyone hopes it will be good, and stand up as a companion piece to the first film, what do you guys think so far?

Also, will they be speaking Norwegian? I'm guessing not, given that there are several English/American actors involved.

A back story that doesn't need telling from John Carpenter's masterpiece, some stories don't need to be told.

A prequel to a remake of a remake!

I heard talk they were going to remake 'They Live' as well, shameful.

Nope, I'm just saying that given that the magazine saw some promise in it, it may be worth watching!

As a friend pointed out, what I'm HOPING for is that the new film offers something new to the old film, and makes us want to go back and watch the old film with the new perspective gained from the new film.

I'm quietly hopeful.
But then again, I was quietly hopeful about Terminator Salvation.

Yes but it's their job to enthuse and drum up interest. It's good to hope, the scenario you describe is the ideal one but more often remakes deliver disappointment and taint the memory of the original. The greater the film the higher the bar is set. So I'm quietly sceptical, it serves me better.
Anyway my flippant reply was just saying if you ask for the general concensus, you have to expect some moans and groans and/or expletives.

As my handle suggests, I'm a John Carpenter die hard, now I'm not blindly hateful of a potential remake. It's just 'The Thing' is Carpenter's masterpiece, that includes the mystery of what happened at camp Norge.

Sometimes not knowing is more interesting that exposition heavy prequels out to cash in on a previous film. Although in all fairness if I was a malevolent biological entity bursting with hate and appetite, I'd try and kill Mary Elizabeth Winstead too.

It's has to be her fault, what is she doing in Norge town!?

I like saying Norge.
