The Japanese Premonition.
Very good, can't ever get enough of Japanese psychological horrors.
Always interesting and clever.

Default Las Acacias

Argentina

Yet another "lonely bloke drives truck across the country" entry in the Argentinian film archives. It certainly isn't for the impatient film goer - not a single word is spoken in the first 10 minutes, and the majority of the movie is spent basically watching a very quiet bloke drive his lorry.

It's not awful by any means. The main character is an intriguing one and the premise of the movie is basically watching as this man changes from ice cold, mean, brooding loner to something a little less harsh, so the fact that this movie is still enjoyable is a testament to his success in filling this character with plenty of depth.

The acting of his co-star leaves a little to be desired. Her baby infant, however, steals the show as surely the cutest baby actor ever to grace the silver screen. I fear that without this fortuitous casting choice the movie may well have descended into a complete snore fest. Whether or not a movie should be allowed to rely so heavily upon the performance of actors too young to even walk, I'll let you decide.

Default I saw water lillies

It is a French film about three 15-year-old girls living in the ultra-modern Paris suburb of Cergy-Pontoise who find the dynamics of their relationships gradually beginning to shift in first-time filmmaker Céline Sciamma's intimate look into the world of synchronized swimming. Floriane (Adele Haenel) is a beautiful blonde with a perfect body and remarkable talent in the pool. Marie (Pauline Acquart) is something of a tomboy taken to water, and Anne (Louise Blachere) is an overweight-but-outgoing swimmer whose crush on a male swimmer (who only has eyes for the physically flawless Floriane) is about to forever change the way these three disparate souls relate to one another

This is one of my absolute favorites - a quiet, brooding psychological thriller with a few gentle twists and turns that keep you guessing. The story of a young girl whose potential musical career is destroyed by a simple act of carelessness and the life long grudge she holds towards that individual.

If you haven't seen it yet, I thoroughly recommend this brilliant work by Denis Dourcourt.

Bodyguard (the Bollywood one)

My Mrs didn't even like it, even though we didn't go to the cinema to watch it (it's only been out a few months and it's been on the telly twice and again this weekend).

It's one redeeming feature is the title song, Tere Mere.

Ra-One though is much better.

Space Battleship Yamato – The effects in this sci-fi blockbuster were impressive but the bland story and characters made it tiring to watch. The main problem is that it lacked the adventure of space travel shown in the trailers. The reason for this is mainly due to every aspect of the movie being played so seriously; the music, the characters, the plot, and so on. This would have been all well and good if there were well developed characters with an edgy plot line but all we got were characters you couldn’t care less about and predictable melodramatic scenes which everyone overacted in. Add to that some absolutely ridiculous plot inconsistencies along with absurd decision making by the main characters and it just doesn’t work. It was also a shame that whilst the ship looked visually impressive on the outside the interior never quite managed to live up to the same standards; it was all a bit too small and you felt like there were only 15 people on the thing.

Overall this isn’t a complete write off as there were times when I was truly getting into it but those moments were few and far between. Maybe it would have been better if they injected some fun into the plot, at least then you could gloss over all the other shortcomings.
2/5

The Message – This is more like it, it’s a thriller about a resistance mole who intercepts enemy messages in order to gain intelligence to carry out assassination attempts. After catching wind of this the Japanese-controlled government rounds up a group of people who handle the messages in an attempt to find the mole. I’ve got to say I really liked this one. I found the characters were are all interesting, each having imperfect traits and seemingly working to their own agenda, making them all believable. The identity of the mole isn’t revealed until way into the second half of the film which keeps you (kind of) guessing. The cast all do a terrific job and as always Xun Zhou, who is quickly becoming my favourite actress, excels.

In the end I found this to be a well-presented intelligent thriller which manages to surprise from beginning to end.
4.5/5

Talking Review the last foreign film you watched

Ra.One, and before that, Trollhunter.

Both pretty good movies in their own way, Ra.One because
I would have never expected Bollywood to produce a superhero
movie, and Trollhunter because of the impressive special effects and I quite enjoy 'shaky cam' movies (Cloverfield being another excellent example).
