Possibly two of the best films I have seen are quite under rated.
Everyone needs to watch 3:10 to Yuma [2007], Christian Bale is phenominal in that, just a breath taking film. The second film everyone must see is Beowulf. It is intense, violent and shocking. Although the animation isn't neccesary it makes the film advanced and gives an old tale a modern twist.

I'm sure people will agree with me by saying Cool Hand Luke. Just a phenomenal performance by Paul Newman, especially the heart-wrenching scene where he sings Plastic Jesus.

The Wicker Man

I don't know of any other film quite like it. It's just brilliant. It's also worth watching the remake, just to see how badly a remake can get it wrong. (and to see Nicolas Cage kick a woman in the face)

Had completley forgotten about Stir of echoes, watched that film as a kid and I remember being terrified, will have to watch it again some day soon.

My list would have to include:

Gladiator
Green Mile
Shawshank
Howls Moving Castle
The Departed

Nothing obscure there but all brilliant films that everyone should see at least once!

Would also recommend "Johnny Mad Dog" as a film that packs a punch without covering it with sugar, one of the most brutal films I've seen in a long time, definitely worth a watch

With respect, is this thread descending into a list of everyone's favourite films? Given the title, I'd initially thought it was for listing films that at the very least offered something unique.

Anyway, having read someone list The Departed (which I agree with), I'd like to say:

Infernal Affairs I and II, though I preferred II.

El Cid
The Constant Gardener
The Tree of the Wooden Clogs
Farewell My Concubine
Das Boot
Lorenzo's Oil
Il Postino
The Kite Runner
Amelie
