You may be able to gather from my choices that I am from the "old school/style" of films for which I make no apology.
My selection is as follows : Penny Serenade I Was a Male War Bride Bringing Up Baby North by Northwest - alright I confess anything with Cary Grant in! The Wicked Lady & a Star is Born - alright anything with James Mason in (also North by Northwest) Sunset Boulevard Meet Me in St Louis Mr Steffington Pillow Talk Cats & Dogs Casablanca (alright I like Claude Reins as well - Mr Skeffington) Gone with the Wind There are others I could mention but I suspect you'd rather I didn't. |

My guess would be that the list of must watch movies will be as wide and varied as the number of responses received. But I will add my two cents worth:
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey - Don't try to understand it...just watch, absorb and enjoy. 2) Moon - This one stars Sam Rockwell, quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. It has a somewhat similar feel and vibe to 2001. 3) Hunt for Red October - The very young Alec Baldwin plays the main character with stellar performances from Sean Connery and Sam Neil among others. I'm not sure I can pinpoint the exact reasons, but every time I see it is on, I can't help but watch it. I don't know why Alec skipped out on the Jack Ryan character and nothing against Harrison Ford, but this is the Tom Clancy movie to see. 4) 300 - It is epic and intimate all at the same time. The filming techniques, since copied many times, were spectacular. I hadn't really seen Gerard Butler or Lena Headey before this movie, but both were captivating. 5) North by Northwest - Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant at their all time best in my opinion. 6) Body Heat - Kathleen Turner and William Hurt...hot, hot, hot! And Ted Danson just prior to his Sam Malone days...he shows why he was picked for the Cheers cast. 7) Prizzi's Honor - Another Kathleen Turner flick, of course beside the incomparable Jack Nicholson, in a dark comedy. they are amazing to watch. 8) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - It can seem long...and certainly depressing at times...but you have to see it. The performances are incredible. Of course Jack Nicholson is awesome, but even the less known actors at that time are terrific. Yes, that is Danny DeVito! 9) Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - The best of the series, probably the best of the genre...the true fan needs to see The Lost Ark, but if you can only see one Indiana Jones movie this is it. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery are fabulous as son and father respectively. 10) Lethal Weapon - If you can get over the real life insanity of Mel Gibson, this first in a series was awesome and no matter what you now think of Mel (He has a couple of screws loose as far as I'm concerned) this movie really highlighted why we like to see Mel in movies. Of course the Mad Max movies and Braveheart are probably must see movies also. OK...so I'll stop at ten, but it is difficult because I could come up with many more. Now please know that I'm a huge Stars Wars fan and maybe even more of a Lord of the Rings fan and I love all the DC and Marvel Comic character movies, but those can be saved for another list. Happy Movie Watching! |

Almost Famous: filled with so many great moments and characters. Funny and incredibly moving - you'd need to be a fucking house brick not to be moved by the "You are home" scene!

Everybody should see Eat Pray Love. Watching it will make you appreciate every single other film you have ever seen so much more than you do now. A bit like surviving a near death experience is supposed to make you enjoy life more.
In fact, watching Eat Pray Love will make you enjoy life more. Because no matter what you are doing at any stage for the rest of your life, you will know that it could be worse. |

My pick is Marathon Man, directed by John Schlesinger. A good thriller with well developed characters and superb performances by Hoffman and Laurence Olivier as one of the screen's most memorable arch villains. The infamous dental scene can still make you wince.
