Here's a link to Total Film's 3 star review of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Released on Wednesday 18 May 2011. *** |

I really want to like this, the reviews seem at odds with this hope though. I was a tad bemused to see 3 stars at the end of the review, given how it was written. I really liked the first one, and still enjoy the "universe" of the Pirate films.

I managed to get out seeing this not once not twice but 3 times at work. Jack Sparrow may be the most boring character in movie history. They need to stop and find something else.

It got a bad review in the News of the World on Sunday but that doesn't surprise me as Robbie Collins gives most films bad reviews unless they are foreign arty types, he should be working for the Guardian.

It isnt that bad y'know. Anyone coming away disappointed should know that this is the 4th entry in a bloated franchise, so what do you expect? Of course it's going to be more of the same, minus Orlando Bland and Keira "one-note" Knightley, which is a good thing in my book.
You'll still shuffle in your seat towards the cluttered Raiders of the Lost Ark cut n paste ending, but Depp is a little more reined in than usual as Sparrow. This time he comes across more heroic and not just a mincing annoyance. If it's any indication of quality then my favourite voyage so far has been Dead Man's Chest, and this falls somewhere between that and Curse of the Black Pearl on my sea-faring barometer.

It was ok, not great but not terrible either. Better than the 3rd one but nowhere near as good as the original. I did get a little bored half way through. I was thinking just how ordinary these films would be without Mr Depp as Jack Sparrow. The Grinch was correct in his review that Sparrow this time is less of a mincer and more of a hero. I though that Ian McShane had a good screen presence as Blackbeard.

No better or worse than any of the others. The drippy story with the Missionary dude was unnecessary..
