I recall in the late nineties, a raft of previously banned 70's horror films got passed by the BBFC and were granted a cinema release (presumably because recent horror movies have pushed the envelope to the point where the earlier classics seem quite tame in comparison and less sophisticated). The Exorcist was amongst them and I was looking forward to finding out what all the fuss was about. I remember only being engaged with the scenes with Regan and less so with the rest of the movie. Years later, I caught The Exorcist on TV and enjoyed it more for the priest's crisis of faith and the film now stands as one of my favourite horror films. Also as a fan of Eli Roth, I enjoyed The Last Exorcism but in a different way. To compare the two is somewhat like comparing Shakespear and Hunter S Thompson. Besides, what would Mark Kermode say?
