Watched One Day. Loved the book. Really didn't enjoy the film though. Love Anne Hathaway normally - but her accent was annoyingly all over the place. Jim Sturgess just wasn't right for the part - not good looking enough. A disappointing 1 (maybe 1.5) stars for me...

Hope Springs Although I doubt I'm the target audience (rest of the audience was ladies in their 50s/60s laughing knowingly) but I enjoyed this comedy-drama. Just try not to see Meryl as Thatcher in the intimate scenes... House at the end of the street Ach it was alright, first thing in the morning screening so didn't have my brain fired up for spotting where the story was going so watching it unfold was entertaining enough. Not that scary if that's what your looking for though. |

The Raid
Absolutely mental, lots of shooting, stabbing, blood and a whole shit load of martial arts. Loved it. and its the first time I have seen the C word used in subtitles in a foreign film. |

@Jay, Its bloody brilliant isn't it? Rented it, watched it, purchased it the next day.
Hanna Having also recently seen The Soloist I think Wright got lucky(ish) with Atonement. Acting was ok, as was the action, however I found the pace all over the place and the editing was very poor. It also struck me as a tad pretentious, but having read a few interviews of Wright he himself seems like a bit of a pretentious tit. 2/5

The Campaign
Simple I think, if you enjoy Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Jay Roach stuff you should like this. Probably not much rewatch value but worth one viewing. My favourite part was the maid. |

You should. I already have, and it was even more awesome the second time. As I knew what to expect I could pay more attention and was even more impressed.
Meet The Parents. Funnier than I remember, but not as funny as I want it to be. 3/5

Crazy High School Prom Night turned Gruesome Horror!
For those who don't know: Story follows a popular kid from high school who is in a dark place following a recent and bizarre tragedy. After turning down a lonely girl's prom request her and her father kidnap him and give her the prom she always wanted. It gets messy after that. From the trailer I expected perhaps a higher budget movie with certain key scenes being a bit longer, but it was a cracking watch. Very fucked up and intense! Oddly positioned back story which tries to link everyone together which was probably not required. Especially set me up for the next Australian Horror on my list which the SnowTown Murders! Anyone already watched it?

Tower Heist
From what I was lead to believe, this was going to be a poor film, hardly worthy of the cast, and yet, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a total "lock your brain away for the duration" movie and, if you follow that advice, it's actually a very well thought out set up comedy. It would be very easy for this to have had a higher than 12 rating simply due to the profanity that could have been used (for every instance where another rude word could have been used, they substituted it for "shit" ) but that didn't take away from the simplistic way everything just naturally flowed together, including a nice turn from all the main stars, the good thing being that everyone was given enough screen time to cement their position in the films hierarchy, yet not enough time that they dominated the film. Eddie was in there just long enough to make you want more Eddie, Stiller was in there just enough as a lead but not long enough to overpower everything else, even the Broderick looked remarkably grown up and nothing like his usual youthful self (I had to wait until about half way through the film before I realized who it was), even the future ex Mrs Fox Mulder didn't ruin it by being sexy and baring her wonderful legs, just when you think she's going to go all sexy agent, she stops. My Mrs said it was just the silliest thing she'd seen but it was enjoyable nevertheless so i'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. |

Just watched Strange Days and The Cell, both films featuring 1) mind-bending technology 2) queasy psychosexual overtones and 3) Vincent D'Onofrio playing a complete turd.
The Cell (Tarsem, 2000) Well, it was a piece of crap, as I expected coming in. Director Tarsem, as befitting a former advertising director, creates some amazing spectacle but unfortunately that's all it really is. The dream-like imagery never contributes to a further understanding of the killer, and while it sticks with you its all a bit empty-headed, which is not what you want in a film that's purportedly all deep and psychological and shit. It would also have been more impacting if the real-life scenes involving the killer and his victims weren't so lurid, and if the real-life characters weren't all so opaque. I'd also like to point out that this film is perhaps even worse than U-571 in terms of Hollywood's Brit-phobia. In this film, the killer himself is American. His victims are American. His abusive mother and father (the latter of which is strongly linked to his messed-up psyche) are American. And yet the inner manifestation of the killer - who is basically the REAL villain of the film, more so that the killer himself - talks and dresses like a flauncy British fancy man. Huh? 2/5 Strange Days (1995) I love that Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron thought, in 1995 'just five-more years and we'll have technology we can use to swap memories with each other'. Anyway, this film starts off alright - promising an atmospheric with a good dose of millennial angst - but ends up not really going anywhere. It starts off as being about the effects of technology and y2k paranoia, then suddenly delves into race relations and police corruption, and it all culminates in a anticlimactic non-conspiracy with an underwhelming reveal. The film does well in making Fiennes character sympathetic despite also being a total sleazeball, but the implied romance and friendship with a female cab driver is pretty implausible. Still beats the Cell though. 3/5 |
