Wrath Of The Titans. ***SPOILERS if anyone cares!!***
See, this is what I wanted from the first one, brain-off entertainment that isn't offensively dire. Action scenes were cool, f/x were decent, and I couldnt help smiling when Neeson and Feinnes were kicking joint ass at the end. An enjoyable 2.5/5 The Addams Family, Hard to know best how to review this, on one hand you have Raul Julia and Angelica Huston doing a superb job as Gomez and Morticia, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Fester. Even the kids are decent, as are the f/x and the set design, in fact the set design is superb, the whole film is dripping with a humerous, macabre touch that works very well...on the other hand there is a pretty dire story plonked in the middle of it all that is too simple and has literally no twists or turns at all. 3/5 I have only just realised what a superb personality Raul Julia was, Gomez is a joy to watch, and despite the unrealistic character he is playing he nails it perfectly. Its a crying shame that his last film was Street Fighter

I like road films. I like little known, weird European films. I like experimental films. I don't expect every film I watch to be action packed.
But this was boring. What you get here is endless scenes of people hugging, smoking and having sex. The locations change but that doesn't really matter. You can't really tell one place from another. In the first half of the film, it's tolerable. You get a sense of the freedom experienced by these young people but by the second half of the film you start wishing that something, anything, will happen. The biggest problem the film has is that it doesn't have any plot whatsoever. And it's long. It goes on and on for more than two hours without anything really happening or changing. When the film started we were a total of four people in the cinema (everyone else was presumably watching Skyfall). After the first hour, the other three left and I was left alone. What kept me there was the fact that I never walk out of a film and the fact that I had paid for it, but I was trying really hard to stay on my seat and not to fall asleep. Pretentious and trying way too hard to be cool. I don't know how TotalFilm gave it such a positive three star rating. I'd give it two stars at best for recreating the 1940s nicely, a nice jazzy soundtrack, some interesting scenes and decent acting. But the whole thing was a waste of time and money. No wonder it took forever to be made. Has anyone else seen this? What did you think? Maybe knowing the source material, of which I personally know nothing, will make this film more tolerable. |

Not quite sure what this has to do with Skyfall, but Raul Julia was a great actor who sadly seems to be all but forgotten. I recently zapped into Kiss of the Spiderwoman. If you watch the serious revolutionary Valentin who doesn't have a humorous bone in this body and then The Addams Family, it shows his range quite nicely.

I think that the idea of a hotel for monsters is a great one. Who knows what quirky, funny and slightly scary (in a childish kind of way) situations may come up? It's also a good opportunity to include in-jokes for those adults in the audience who grew up with films about Frankenstein, Dracula et al.
Alas, the execution isn't half as good as the idea. The film follows a very predictable path and nothing very original comes up. The idea of a place full of monsters is mostly a wasted opportunity as the monsters are never really given the chance to be very monster-y. You could write the same story with almost any other old characters. That said, the characters are nicely drawn, the film has a couple of good laughs and Frankenstein is particularly adorable with his large extremities, loose head and his cool bass guitar playing. One more thing: I think the director has a really cool, appropriate name for a monster film, Genndy Tartakovsky. Overall, it's a decent film which will probably keep the young ones in the audience entertained but it's also a missed opportunity to make some something really special. |

The film is actually not that bad. If you can get past the gangsta aspect it's worth a watch. The aliens are really well done for a UK film with such a restricted budget. I was pretty impressed with a few scenes. It reminded me of Aliens at points but suffered from that thing that all UK films seem to have to be lighthearted at points and jovial in attitude even though it's an alien invasion.

Jeff I knew I wasn't going to like it as soon as they mugged they girl right at the start, having lived and worked in London all my life I have a strong hatred to these type of urban lowlifes. 15 minutes in you had a white girl talking like she was from Jamaica, that was enough for me.......nuff said, ya get me boi.

I'm with you on that one, Jay. I saw the trailer and that was enough for me. No thank you. urban lowlifes are all around where I live, esp on Fri & Sat nights. Tbh most of them (round here) are bored juveniles rather than thugs but they still get on everyone's tits.
white kids talking like they're Jamaica,MON with their pants down around their knees...f*** off. |
