Gonna watch Sucker Punch later to see just how bad it really is.[/quote]
Visually it's a great deal of fun, but plotwise? See if you agree with me that it's probably the weakest 'prison break' plot ever. |

The Help
I think I preferred the book but this is a pretty decent film, and a number of the cast should do well with nominations come award season - Viola Davis the pick of the bunch, closely followed by Jessica Chastain. |

The missus had been in London all week on business...or she's having an affair....either way, I've had the TV to myself and been playing catch up.
Shutter Island. Loved it. As clever as a man with two heads. Must watch it again to see all the clues. As usual, effortless, masterclass cinema from Scorsese. Kick Ass I didn't have much interest in seeing this until I watched X men: First Class and Matthew Vaughan went up in my estimation. Turns out it was bloody brilliant. Well crafted and very entertaining. Super 8 Much better than I expected from everyones favourite over-rated hack. Some great performances from the lead kid and the Fanning girl and a smattering of good scenes. The hilarious Super 8 movie that plays over the end credits is a highlight. JJ Abrams is not the new Spielberg, or Joe Dante (which this film owes more than a passing nod to) despite his best attempts to copy them. And Michael Giachinno's 'John Williams' score is unmemorable. Rise of the Planet of the Apes Damn. Wasn't expecting anything from this but it was really, really good. A no nonsense, well made movie with more than its fair share of WOW moments. I got emotionally engaged in Caesars plight and was rooting for him all the way. Despite the wall to wall CG (the apes are extraordinary), director, Rupert Wyatt keeps everything clean and clear, never falling back on the old shaky-cam, lens flare histrionics of most modern directors, and for that he should be commended. The only real hiccups were a bit of CG helicopter nonsense towards the end, (which broke my immersion a bit) and an unnecessary 'gag' line from the original movie. Other than that though, two big thumbs up. |

I was enjoying it, for the most part, while it was on, but when I think back I can't remember anything apart from the bits that annoyed me. I think it's just Abrams completely forgettable visual sense (or lack of). There's no scenes you remember from a good 'cinema' perspective. He seems to just place the camera anywhere and hope an editor can put it together in a meaningful way. It's like he's trying to copy those Spielberg movies he loves but has no understanding of why they are so good.
Put it this way - You could take any Spielberg movie into a film school class and the students could spend the whole day analysing his structure, composition, staging etc. You couldn't do that with a JJ Abrams movie, there's nothing there to learn. |

Am I the only one who will wait for Super 8 to be screened on Sky before passing judgement?
I have a feeling it's going to be like ET, everyone will rave about it but it will end up not being any good. |

It's really not bad. I'm not a fan of Abrams but this was diverting enough. Not memorable enough for me to watch it again though.

Big giant flarey peas. So you can't see what you're eating.
