Spoiler alert!!!!
I'm not sure if I should like this film or not. I expected it to be better than it was and would have been immensely disappointed had I spent my hard earned money to go and see it at the cinema. My Mrs on the other hand, I'm sure, would LOVE this film as she likes all this soppy romantic nonsense. It was ultra boring in the boring bits, like Staten Island, but then they gave that little hint that something was amiss and the excitement levels went up as I thought the film was just about to move up a gear. But no, it's crap, and the premise that a bunch of aliens, with hats, control the world BUT choose to let love get away with it is just a terrible con with which to promise us a really different sort of film. If it was like Inception, layer upon layer of mystery and wonderment as to what was going to happen next, then I would have given it the thumbs up, but it's about as boring as it can get, they have all these powers, and yet, they are only shown using them 3 times? It was akin to watching some CCTV footage, in the blind hope that something would happen, and then, after 2 hours of watching not a lot, it's the end of the tape. 1 out of 5 for me, sorry, it can't even make up it's mind what sort of film it wants to be, political thriller, love story, sci-fi, ballet, anything. and 0.5 of that score is for the combined cleavage towards the end of the film and the bendy leggedness of the ballet class. |

It was on for about a week at the Omni Vue. Two screenings a day. It's available on import already.

Double post!
J Edgar The thing about Leo is, he really does make films that look good and I'm keen to see. Looking at his imdb resume theres only 4 of his films I haven't seen (Dons Plum, Total Eclipse, Celebrity and Critter 3), and I haven't really been trying... Again, an impressive performance and insight into a man I don't know that much about. However I wasn't too much of a fan of so much of the film being set when Hoover was in his 60s/70s meaning the main cast having to be in their 'old man' make up and prosthetics. Distracting. Also, Armie Hammer has very distracting eyelashes. My cinema companion asked "you're jealous aren't you?" (I am known for numerous mascara purchases in search of the perfect lash). |

Did I miss something here (I did nod off for about 10 mins half way through) but I thought they were angels and the one they referred to as The Chairman was God?

I'm pretty sure it's implied that they're supposed to be working for God. I don't think they refer to themselves as angels but I think that's what you're meant to get from it.

Haywire
Very poor movie by Soderbergh, I just hope he hasn't ruined Gina Carano's future as an action star. All of the best action set pieces are in the trailer. Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender & Bill Paxton are all wasted in this film. Gina's not an actress but held her own and her MMA talents are wasted. Ewan McGregor is not wasted only because he is not in the same league as an actor as the rest of the cast. The editing is awful and it lacks so much pace that I though I may nod off at any time. Gina Carano would have better off being in something like MI4 to help kick off her career. She would easily have been better than Paula Patton. The total blame for how bad this film is lies solely with Soderbergh, he tries hard to make a cool Bourne type thriller and fails miserably. |

I thought I was seeing the same film again, I'm sure they used the same characters and settings and scenes in the first one, or possibly the 3rd one.
Don't know if it's a really really good film that's been made into a really really crap film or the other way around. And then I remembered that I'd just watching Van Helsing and she did the same thing in that as well. I think I'll have to give this a 34-26-34 out of 10 but I'll gladly be corrected ![]() |

The one with Jim Caviezel in it.
Absolutely LOVE this film, the poor nice humble guy being screwed by the guys with power, and then...REVENGE!!!!!! Basicly, it's a Whodunit, wrapped up in a love story, wrapped up in a pirate treasure quest, wrapped up in old school France of Napoleon times, wrapped up in a mentor/student story, wrapped up in a split family tragedy and so on and so forth. You have to watch every single moment of the film as all the parts slowly click together, piece by piece until the conclusion. And a fantastic performance by the late Richard Harris, spot on performances by Guy Pearce and Jim, even Jacopo is spot on as the man he saves the life of, right down to the captain who finds him, every character is cast to perfection. So often forgotten in the "My Favourite Films" lists, when the Count makes his appearance for the first time, even though you know who he is, it's just "WOW!!!!" The stand out scene for me though has to be when Jacopo trundles up the drive of the biggest house in all of France in a horse and cart and tells the owner he wants to buy it. The owner says "You little git, I'll set the dogs on you" before Jacopo reveals the cart to be full to the brim with gold and jewels ![]() For me, as far as feel good films go, there is The Iron Giant (animated), The Shawshank Redemption, The Princess Bride, and this. They all get 12 out of 5 because they are the sort of film you could watch day in, day out and be happy that everything is going to be alright ![]() |
