Thumbs down asian film subtitles

recently I purchased The Detective 2 twice from hong kong via e-bay and had to send both copies back for bad subtitling. as world cinema is still a niche market in the uk surely there must someway of stopping this happening because i think this would put newcomers to this market off buying asian films.this has now made me very wary of buying from abroad and would still like to get the above film which is not available in england

It may well have been a bad translation through poor understanding of English syntax. It might not have been deliberate ,but a studio without financial support may not have the funds to spend on a proper translation.
I always do a bit of research on any 'risky' release via imdb before taking the plunge.

Are you sure it was a Hong Kong DVD because they usually have excellent English subtitles. A lot of ebay sellers from Hong Kong tend to sell pirate copies or mainland/Taiwan versions of films, which tend to have subtitles that look like they have been obtained by using an online translator. I usually use YesAsia, you might have to pay a bit more but at least you'll be able to understand the movie.
