Default Michael Fassbender-why the fuss

So, he's played Magneto, he's in Prometheus, he's soon to be Noah, his name has been connected to the Robocop remake and he's a fan favourite to succeed Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.
There's not a week goes by when someone doesn't mention his name in connection with whatever new film is in the pipeline at that moment.
Does he deserve the praise though? I've seen him in a few films and he's always just seemed a decent, dependable even predictable actor. He was decent in Xmen-First Class, he was decent in Inglourious Basterds and he was a bit annoying in that film where he gets tortured by the wee guy from This is England and his mates. Shouldn't the next big acting talent be something a bit more than decent? Shouldn't we put our hopes into an actor who is capable of more than just being consistently decent?
Any thoughts?

I agree, he's dependable, capable of subtle performances (he was in Fish Tank) but it doesn't explain why he's everywhere. I guess it's his moment to be the latest leading man.

I recorded Fish Tank on my Virgin hard drive as I had wanted to see it for ages due to it being filmed on the Council estate that I grew up on. I sat down the other day to watch it and found that the wife had deleted it. I wasn't happy.

That bites. If I see it coming up on Film4 I'll let you know jay.
Fassbender, don't know what to make of him, he doesn't seem to have been around long enough to be getting this frantic casting and attention but maybe I haven't seen him in much. He wasn't exactly flawless in X-Men First Class but I haven't seen him in Hunger yet.

I think he's good. Honestly don't know if I'd go for great as I haven't seen him in much and, no offence to him, haven't paid too much attention. That said though, if he's sweet in Prometheus I'm afraid I'll probably fall head over heels in love with him (I'm a girl, sorry!).
But isn't that how it usually goes - someone stars in one or two films that seem to catch the eye of certain directors, etc and suddenly they're everywhere? Not always because they're particularly great, but just "because".

In my opinion his accents in films tend to slide all over the place, surely a basic skills for an actor t have.

I completely agree, Zippy. His Irish accent definitely crept in to his Magneto performance as the film went on...

Despite the accent, Fassbender was excellent as Lehnsherr/ Magneto. He and McAvoy carried the film in my opinion, and I'm not even an "X Men" fan. Still looking forward to "Prometheus" (can't say I'm in a hurry to watch "Shame") in June as well.

I may have to reasess my opinion of Fassbender. After seeing him in Hunger - he can have acting chops, guts and charisma. He gives a powerful performance, almost difficult to watch in a hard-hitting terribly bleak film.
