The best sci fi film is Blade Runner which still looks good today and in second place Watchmen.
I've seen Sunshine but can't remember anything about the film which I would remember if it was the "best" |

I loved Sunshine. Give it a 7 and three-quarters out of 10 (tough criticism, indeedy). It's one of those movies one can watch over and over every few months.
The visuals and sound is astonishing (with the right kit, off course). Sunshine definitely has divided opinions - same as Prometheus. 50% love and hate it. For Mr. Boyle to have gone Sci-Fi, it's truly a remarkable attempt. Now all we need is a sequal, a prequal and a trilogy and it all goes t*^ts up in the end! |

I assume this is a joke, right? Either that or you've been staring directly at the sun too much (and have thus turned into a raging psychopath - which is apparently what happens).
I doubt if Sunshine was even the best sci-fi film released that week. Like all of Danny Boyle's films it's pretentious codswallop. However, for some reason they seem to be like the emperor's new clothes and everyone's afraid to point out the obvious for fear of being ridiculed (see Quentin Tarantino for the same effect). Or is it just me? |

If I remember correctly the marketing campaign surrounding the release of Sunshine, promoted it as a plain, simple, popcorn film with about as much substance as Michael Bay's disaster of a movie, Armageddon. The tagline being "Their Mission, Save the World."
This didn't make sense to me with Danny Boyle and the ever impressive Alex Garland attached. When I finally sat down to watch the film I found that Danny Boyle had again taken a well established genre and put his own style to it. The merits of the photography, effects, editing and script cannot be understated. Certainly it borrows from classic movies (Alien certainly comes to mind) but Sunshine is clearly an artistic, thought provoking disaster film that delivers character and plot as well as action. In my opinion it deserves much more recognition and it is certainly worthy of more praise than Slumdog Millionaire. It really should be held up as one of Boyle's career highlights. |
