Errol Flynn
Errol Flynn had some very fine moments and some appalling moments - The Adventures of Robin Hood being one of the best. He was the equivalent of Brad Pitt in his time, but was he just a pretty face, or could he truly act?

Sooo...no one has any thoughts on Flynn, huh? Oh dearie dear. How depressing. Should I start a thread on Jessica Alba instead and see if that meets with more success?

In the Flynn films that I have seen, he presents the same persona, I would say he is more of a star than an actor.

 To be honest, I've not seen much of Errol Flynn's movies. I have seen Robin Hood and liked it. Recently found myself without a job so got a bit of time to fill at the moment and I'm looking to watch more classic films. Any suggestions?

Try the following:
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex Dodge City The Sea Hawk Apart from Robin Hood, they are the classic Flynn films. He wasn't the greatest actor in the world, but he had marvellous screen presence, even if the jingoism of his films was embarrassing.

my favourite...
Dawn Patrol... with Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone (one of his few "good guy" roles) and David Niven. By today's standards, the movie has not aged gracefully, what with the cliched white silk scarves, "jolly ho" dialogue and gentlemanly war is hell attitude, but the underlying theme of the guilt of a commander sending his troops to their certain death is as timeless as the current war films. One of the best scenes, repeated throughout the film, is the counting of the drone of motors of returning planes to determine how many had died... powerful.

Thanks muchly. Just picked up some dvds. None are Errol Flynn though. WH Smiths cheap dvd section is sometimes alright. Got Harvey, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ghandi and Psycho.

I think I like the idea of Errol Flynn more than his actual work, he seems to be more the Russell Crowe circa 'Gladiator' of his generation as oppposed to the Brad Pitt for my ten pence. My understanding is he liked a punch up, he liked a drink and he liked the ladies, in that order.
His private life is far more interesting to me than his output, particularly interesting is the Dennis Hopper character in 'Apocalypse Now' is based on his son if I remember correctly from 'Dispatches'. I always tend to get confused between him, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and possibly Cary Elwes. I'm a philistine I know
