Finished The Road. sigh. So sad. Even more harrowing in some ways than the film because you get more detail. Saying that, the film captures the essence of the book very well and Viggo is perfectly cast. It was beautifully written, like poetry in some places.

I think Cormac McCarthy is one of the true litrary giants of the twentieth century. Ive not read many of his books but those I have read all use the same sparse, intensley descriptive style of writing that you mention Kiba.
He has a talent for description and eliciting emotion that few authors achieve today.

Still on the subject of The Road, there's a song by Editors which really fits the book/film.

No Sound But the Wind - Editors

Just did a quick search and apparently the title is a line from the book so I guess the book inspired it. Great song.

Unfortunately I stopped reading about a year or two back. Dunno why, just didn't feel like it. So naturally I'm working myself back into a groove, slowly but steadily. Started with the comics, nice stuff you can blast through relatively quickly, now I'm in a short story mood. Currently I'm reading through a collection of short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, chiefly because the collection I saw in the library advertised Rashomon on the cover, and that's something I've been wanting to read for a while.

Which reminds me, libraries are fantastic.

Aren't you at Uni? Or does that reading not count?

Reading for the course, I count that separately to reading for personal pleasure.

Just picked up a little light reading for the summer.

Lucifer Rising: A Book of Sin, Devil Worship and Rock 'n' Roll by Gavin Baddely.

Ive read two other books by this guy and he is a great writer. He is informed, unbiased and very easy to read.
This is all about how Satanism, the Devil etc are portrayed in Rock music, the cinema and the media. Should be good.

Looking forward to comparing notes! I'll be thinking about who I would cast...
I read it in a day. (Hehe). Wow. Wow. Book of the year so far for me. I loved it. But yeah agreed on the casting. For a start, can't we find a Brit for Em? Hathaway is too glam, and can she master a regional accent? He might be ok.

In other casting news they have Romala Garai as Sylvie and Rafe Spall as Ian. They sound fine. Wonder if they'll do any filming in Edinburgh for those scenes. probably not.

Yay! I'm glad you loved it.

I like Romala Garai. I transcribed an interview that Matt Mueller (former Ed of TF) did with her, and she was so articulate, and came across brilliantly... In fact, I'd rather she was Em than Anne Hathaway.

I don't really know much about Rafe Spall but I know I love his pa.

I don't know whether I can be bothered to read Starter For Ten, having already seen the film but I'm definitely going to get hold of The Understudy - I've heard it's even better than One Day!

I haven't read the understudy but I'll look out for it. I think I might have preferred the film version of Starter for 10.

ooh books are great.
