With you on Brotherhood Porkchop. Cracking film with some superb action. Highly enjoyable fare.
And Stevin mentioned The Host. I recorded this a while back and have it on a disc gathering dust on the shelf. Keep meaning to watch it but never quite get round to it. |

Theres another film called Brotherhood which is a korean film about two brothers who go to war. Its awesome and possibly one of the best war films ever made. Even better than Saving Private Ryan.
Other favourites from me.. Emotional hard hitters. Life Is Beautiful. Whale Rider Cinema Paradiso and on the spookie front Ringu Audition Various Lust Caution In The Empire Of The Senses. Black Book

I seem to remember R Point being alright. Was it as creepy as my memory serves me to believe?

Jean- Luc Godard described cinema as "the most beautiful fraud in the world." thought i'd just ask a general question about what cinema means to you on a more 'personal' note? and what are your favourite foreign language films?

Agree with 'Maria full of Grace' above, grim but gripping. Also agree with 'Jean de Florrette' and 'Manon des Sources' and finally 'Let the right one in' is a touching and atmospheric story
Surprised no one has mentioned 'Betty Blue', utterly compelling and tragic film, amazing central role by Beatrice Dalle Iranian films 'gabbeh' and '10' both fantastic films, the colour and landscapes in gabbeh are breathtaking. 'Kurdish/Armenian 'Vodka Lemon', love the cinematography and black humour. 'Ammos Perros' and 'Babel' both epic 'Hidden', I think this is my favourite thriller, gripping, atmospheric and intense Austrian film Turkish film 'Uzak', its slow but gripping social realism 'The Story of the weeping camel' is incredibly moving and beautifully shot, great landscapes 'Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring', wonderfully shot 'Divine Intervention', love this thought provoking, quirky, slow paced Palestinian film with one very memorable political scene influenced by the Matrix Serbian film 'Underground', complex, very funny, slapstick, tragic, surreal... 'The White Diamond' by Herzog, this very refreshing docu-film's real life characters make this so entertaining... Tamil film 'The Terrorist', based on a true story is everything that's great about world cinema, the lead actress role is mesmorising |

Thirst - directed by Chan-wook Park
This was hugely disappointing, I'm posting it as a Non-recommendation. I was expecting something stylish, atmospheric and interesting from the director of Old Boy and the Vengeance films. Thirst turned out to have none of what made those films good, it was boring and focused on the two main characters shagging, over and over again. It wasn't sexy sex either just samey. I gave up on it. I have no idea why it's had good reviews, I'd advise you all to avoid it unless you like arty farty tedium. |

If you mean Caché (2005) by Haneke - forget about it. It's the most overrated foreign language film of recent times. Boring and right up its own a*se. A terrible waste of anyone's time.

It is an awful film though. Pretentiousness personified.

Hidden is fantastic. As is La Haine. As is Thirst.
