I'm a 22-year-old female and currently subscribe to Empire and Total Film. I've noticed that not many girls I speak to read film magazines, or have even heard of them! I also find that I'm one of the few females in my circle of friends that actually like films other than the stereotypical 'chick flick'. Why is this? The current readership of UK film magazines are around 70% male. Do guys like film more than girls? I can't believe this is true! There must be plenty of girls that are as passionate about film as I am...?

I read some sites like this one, but I don't get any magazines delivered or anything. I like to watch whatever's out, I'm not necessarily into girl flicks per se. In fact, I just saw the Watchmen movie.

i'm a girl who's been reading Total Film and Empire for about three and a half years (I'm 24) and i too have often wondered why film mags are "guys' mags", why more men read film mags than women, and why being a film buff is typically more of a guy thing..... as a journalism student i'd like to see an investigation into the subject....
![]() p.s. on the other hand, being a die-hard TV fans is often seen as more of a girl's thing, isn't it? |

My girlfriend is already buried under a pile mags, Many claim that certain celebrities are overweight whilst the other one says they are too thin? She does squander my copy of Empire and TF after I have finished.
It just seems like the last of the remain taboo's, Women are more prominent the gaming industry now than they were 10 years ago and they are increasing. Perhaps women get enough spoilers from the tv/soap magazines/newspapers. I don't really know. Think of yourself as a pioneer. Just don't burn any clothing. |

im female and i read video and film magazines. maybe thats also because i want to get into the industry as an editor so i read what ever i can get my hands on. i actually really enjoy this magazine that i picked up on my way out of london. the articles are very well written and dont seem to be "genderized" like some of the american ones i read. (titles escape me) so count me in as another female film magazine reader

Hi, I am female, I am 22 too and I and actually have not subscribed to any film magazine, but still I do read quite a lot online. However, I can tell you, that most of my female friends also are movie-fans (watching not only "chickflicks"

I am a 22 year old woman, and I subscribe to Total Film. I read Empire occasionally. I rate movies on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I read online stuff about movies. I also watch trailers on Apple, and YouTube. I like to keep up to date on everything thats happening in the movie world. I like a range of films, and tend to avoid 'chickflicks' when I can, I more into David Fincher, Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Spike Lee and many more.

I'm not subscribed but I do read film magazines every so often... mostly Total Film, but also any others that catch my eye or feature articles about films/actors/directors etc that I'm interested in... since 2002 really, I'm 23 now.
Not really a fan of chickflicks but then again I'm not really a girly-girl. I was one of 3 girls in a class of about 30 A Level Film Studies students at college, too. Not sure about the other classes but I know there weren't many! One or two female friends are also into "proper" films (I use the term loosely) but the rest are pretty much either not interested or only into comedies/romcoms. It's a shame! |

I'm a 33 year old female and have read Sight & Sound for the last 15 years. I know some women who also read sight and sounds and we sometimes will buy and issue of Empire or Total Film.
I think the main reason for women not buying and subscribing to film magazines is that women for the most part will buy magazines which also include film reviews for the types of films they might like to see e.g. heat et al. Also they are more likely to see celebrity interviews on tv shows which will whet their appetitite for a specific film. I'm not being sexist it's just the way it is. Women simply aren't as geeky about film for the most part. Also, whether this is due to lack of demand from women or because of the way the magazines are marketed. Total Film and Empire are definately written with a male readership in mind. They are also displayed in the male section of newsagents near to nuts and esquire and the like. This could also contribute to a lack of female readership. I have always found sight and sound to be non gender specific and very much geared at serious film fans. Great mag for everyone. Just my opinion. Rie |

I'm female and read Total Film, Empire and Filmstar magazines. I also buy DVDBluray Review (I think that's what it's called!) and used to buy Film Review and DVD Monthly before they stopped publishing.
I like film mags because of all the info about upcoming films and reviews about films I might not have heard about before (like straight-to-dvd films or more obscure films). |
