Shot for loose Francs and set almost entirely in one room, Jean-Pierre Melville’s debut is nonetheless strikingly cinematic: graceful, lyrical and profoundly compassionate. It tracks a trio’s relationship over “a hundred evenings”, an old man and his niece (Jean-Marie Robain and Nicole Stéphane) forced to house a German lieutenant (Howard Vernon) during the Occupation. Bergman and Bresson watched closely. You should too.
