Shot in Jamaica by French director Jérôme Laperrousaz, this doc explores the nation’s musical heritage: principally spiritual reggae and its more booty-and- guns-flavoured offshoot dancehall.

Opening with the funeral of dancehall legend Bogle, it’s crammed with snippets of performance footage and interviews with key figures from the poetically insightful Bunny Wailer to the defiantly controversial Lady Saw.

With subtitles underscoring the lyrics, it effectively gets across the music’s roots in slavery and the current hardships of ghetto gun culture.

Alas, the haphazard structure chafes against its gritty aspirations.
