Adam Driver and Joaquin Phoenix were approached for Lex Luthor

Other options explored before Jesse Eisenberg

The reaction to Jesse Eisenberg’s recent casting as Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman has been relatively positive, but it could have been very different had Warner Bros. persuaded one of their original targets to sign on.

THR claims that both Adam Driver and Joaquin Phoenix were approached regarding the role before Eisenberg was cast, with both actors eventually passing up the opportunity.

According to the report, Driver was keen on the role, but was unable to accept due to scheduling issues, while Phoenix rejected the role out of hand.

It certainly seems that Warner’s thinking was to cast somebody of an age that could make them a contemporary of Clark Kent’s, in contrast with the older actors who have played the role in the past.

For our money, Eisenberg is an excellent pick, and will make for a worthy adversary when the film arrives in UK screens on 6 May 2016…

What do you think of Eisenberg's casting? Tell us, below!

Largely positive?!?! Where the hell have you been looking on the Internet as it has certainly not been largely positive or just positive for that matter. Sure there are some fans of the casting choice but just because you are doesn't mean you can write it being as largely positive. I think Jesse is a great actor but he is not lex Luthor in my eye.

Going completely against the grain here, I personally think the casting is genius!!! Eisenberg has always played smart, slightly geeky and whitty characters. Lets face it Lex Luthor needs to be smart and have his wits about him, he is after all the head of a major corporation (The Social Network anyone???). Times have changed, CEO's are no longer old men who have worked their way up the food chain. Eisenberg is perfect for a modern day billionaire evil mastermind who can outsmart the MOS. I cannot wait for this feature, thought they executed the first film brilliantly although they definitely needed to add more humour and Eisenberg is the answer in the forthcoming sequel!!

Pleased that Joaquin Phoenix turned the role down as I personally think that he would make for an awesome Joker should they spin off into a solo Affleck Batman film.

Yeah I love Jesse and I think he can make this great (I hope 'cause it looks like its going to be bloody hard, + I still can't imagine him bald) but the reaction hasn't been positive of what I read so far. I was shocked at first because I had just finished reading Superman Red Son in which Luthor is most of the time a grown man, he's the president of the US and Jesse certainly does't look like that. Anyways we'll just have to wait and see...
