Adam McKay talks difficulty of adapting The Boys

“It’s a $100 million, rated-R, anti-superhero movie”

The Other Guys director Adam McKay has offered an update regarding the status of his adap of gritty comic The Boys.

The original comic is a brilliant, filthy deconstruction of superhero culture full to bursting with swearing, nudity and bloody violence.

The titular Boys are bad-ass mofos who are tasked with policing superheroes and villains – and using any force necessary.

But it’s precisely that meaty premise that means turning comic writer Garth Ennis’ concept into a marketable, profitable film is a difficult task.

As McKay says: “You really have to wait until the draft is done to get serious about it, plus it’s like a $100 million, rated-R, anti-superhero movie, so we have to see who bites on it.”

Still, he has ideas about who he wants to cast in the film, with Russell Crowe a favourite for team leader Billy Butcher.

“I’ve sat with some people. I really like the idea of Russell Crowe for [Billy] Butcher,” the director says. “We met and had kind of an interesting meeting.”

I cannot believe someone is actually adapting the Boys with an eye to doing it properly. The studios are going to run a mile 0.0 Better have Simon Pegg in there though!

Good to see he wants to keep that dark tone and not soften it. Promising. However Russell Crowe? To play a slightly overweight yet massive, angry, Cockney that can tear apart superheroes? No. Tom Hardy or Gerard Butler I'd say. Keep Simon Pegg. As long as McKay doesn't work in Will Ferrell somewhere it's OK.

Definitely Simon Pegg for Wee Hughie Cambell as it is him. Gerard Butler as Butcher would be good, however he IS a tool. Tom Hardy would suit it better i feel. Big and Bad enough for Bronson. Michael Clarke Duncan for Mothers Milk ?? Can't think of many alternatives, Vincent Cassel for the Frenchman. It has to be!! Madder than a bucket of frogs and custard. Gianna Jun or Chiaki Kuriyama for the Female or a young unknown as these two are a little bit "old" in my eyes. (she is a kid after all)

There is no way this movie will happen !!!! I've read all of The Boys and I'll be amazed if any studio green lights that filth. The series also has a pretty weak story.
