Adam Shankman adapting Rock Of Ages

Another Broadway musical hits the movies…

Adam Shankman brought Hairspray successfully to the screen, so it's no surprise that New Line wants him to try again with Rock Of Ages.

The show follows two people who meet at the titular club on the Sunset Strip in LA, fall in love (well, it is a musical) and try to make the relationship work as they belt out '80s rock anthems from the likes of Journey, Twisted Sister and Bon Jovi. Yikes.

Shankman seems to think it'll make a great film, though. "I had the best time of my life making Hairspray and badly wanted another musical, and when I watched Rock of Ages, I was struck by the fact that not only had much of the audience seen it more than once, every guy in the audience knew the words to the songs," Shankman tells Variety.

"What an extraordinary opportunity to open the genre to an audience that otherwise wouldn't go see a musical." At least, that's his plan.

The musical's creator, Chris D'Arienzo, has written the script for the film, and Shankman will shoot later next year for a 2011 release. All together now: "Don't stop belieeeevin'…"
