Alan Rickman joins Johnny Depp on his Todd...

Brit thesp to join Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd

BY Total Film Jan 8th 2007 14:14PMFILED UNDER: Movie news

Alan Rickman will be wiggling his larynx in a cinema near you at the end of the year – he’s signed on for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd musical.

Rickman will star alongside Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen in the DreamWorks and Warner Bros co-production.

Seeing as Todd is based on the Stephen Sondheim Broadway show of the same name, with Gladiator’s John Logan penning the film version, Burton clearly felt a bit of British theatrical class was needed.

Alan’s character, Judge Turpin, is classic Rickman – a sleazy lawgiver who falsely imprisons Depp’s Todd, which sounds like a perfect opportunity to whisper sinisterly, bark insults and generally ham it up.

The film starts production next month in London.
