Avatar 2 won't be released until at least 2015

James Cameron to relocate to New Zealand for part of the production

Avatar may be the highest-grossing movie of all time, but director James Cameron isn't rushing himself when it comes to making the sequel(s).

In fact, according to a recent profile by The New York Times, Avatar 2 may not open until at least 2015 (and definitely not the 2014 release date previously mooted).

Cameron is said to have bought 2,500 acres of farmland around Lake Pounui in New Zealand, and is expected to live there for at least half a year during production of Avatars 2 and 3 (which he's currently scripting).

The sequels are likely to be shot in Peter Jackson's Wellington production studio, with Weta Digital handling the visual effects, though the motion-capture work will take place in California.

So don't go expecting Avatar 2 for at least a few years. Let's hope that audiences are still interested in seeing it in 2015...

Happy to wait for an Avatar sequel? Let us know...

I'm happy for it to gestate. I wouldn't wish to see another Avatar but I would like to explore more of that universe. Why do I feel that clever Mr Cameron knows something we don't, like, will the 2015 date be synonymous with another leap forward in cinema technology...? BTW I still stand by my theory that he will have an underwater race that will somehow connect to the Abyss

This will probably mean Avatar 2 will go up against The Avengers 2.

does anyone else suspect this has to do with peter jackson announcing the hobbit being 3 films instead of 2? that means the 3rd hobbit film will come out in 2014, so cameron and fox probably want the 2015 holiday season all to themselves.

@ilikescifi I bloody LOVE that idea! Would have been great if the company mining unobtanium in Avatar had been Benthic Petroleum, with technology supplied by Cyberdyne (or Hyperdyne Systems to link it all to Aliens).
