Avengers Assemble: The Avengers gets new title and official poster

Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye line-up!

Avengers Assemble! No, not the popular catchphrase first bellowed by Thor but usually uttered by Captain America in Marvel's ace comic-book series, but the brand-new title of Joss Whedon's Avengers movie, which is now due to hit UK cinemas on April 26.

Yep, you'll be queuing around the block for Marvel Avengers Assemble in the UK this Spring (it's a UK exclusive title), so make sure you ask for the right movie at your local Odeon.

Though, to be fair, they'll probably still take your ticket for The Avengers.

It's a brave move to change the title of your biggest tentpole flick mere weeks before it's due to hit cinemas in one of your biggest territories, but we love Marvel Avengers Assemble.

It captures the giddy joy we'll get when we finally see these superheroes together on the big screen for the first time.

And, whilst we haven't seen the script, we're fairly sure we'll get another entry for one of our 'Movies Where Someone Says The Title Of The Movie In The Movie' lists.

As for the new Marvel Avengers Assemble poster, you can see that below. And, much like the new title, it makes us feel very happy indeed.

Just think, in a couple of months we'll get to see the film we dreamed about as kids - all of our favorite Marvel characters, on the big screen. At once.

And just in case that's not enough Avengers action for you, here's a handful of trailers to help get you even more excited for the big event.

"all of our favorite Marvel characters, on the big screen. At once." Really? Because I don't' see Spider-man in that image...

I'm assuming this title change is just for the UK market, as the official US one-sheet on Marvel's site still gives the title as "Marvel's The Avengers". Worried us Brits might confuse Iron Man & Black Widow for Steed & Peel?

Um, I really don't think it's 'Marvel Avengers Assemble', I think it's 'Avengers Assemble' with the 'Marvel' above it.

If you look at the text of the credit block below the title, it still says 'Marvel's The Avengers' not 'Avengers Assemble'. So that seems more like a poster design thing rather than an actual title change.

Worst poster I've seen since those early X-Men First Class silhouettes with the faces. Nick Fury looks like he's in the middle of a break dancing routine, Cap is now about 10 feet tall apparently, the Hulk just can't figure out where that smell is coming from, Hawkeye is checkin' out bee'achez, Black Widow has been robbed of elbows, Thor thinks he may have left the stove on and Iron Man now seems to be able to use the Force.

How Big is Hulk! I really don't like this title change, in fact I don't much like the fact that people think we need telling that heroes are assembling. Really? I thought they were all going to fight one another to the last man.

DUMB DUMB DUMB! Anybody old enough to remember the old 60's TV Avengers is not going to see Marvel's Avengers are they? And even if they are old and confused enough to go by mistake, why not welcome the extra box office returns?? An unfathomable decision by Disney. Clearly they have a 'thing' for changing titles (see John Carter).

This looks like a poster some Fanboy has pieced together to satisfy his creative urges. All the characters in the foreground look like they are really tiny compared to Hulk and Cap, and the car that Hulk is standing behind. It also implies that Iron Man will be the star of the movie as he is front and centre, while Nick Fury will be relegated to staring at Black Widow's a*s - which really p**ses me off, cos that's my job...

MadMatt above seems to have got it right - the credit blub at the bottom seems to say 'Marvel's The Avengers' which i hope is true. Avengers Assemble is frankly a stupid name for a film

I REALLY hope it's not "Avengers Assemble" - sounds like a stupid name for a film aimed at 5 year olds. How can anybody at TF like this title?

@KingofSpain - That's a touch ageist, isn't it? My mum went to see Iron Man 1 & 2 and The Incredible Hulk, and she's seen Thor on DVD. She's old enough to remember The Avengers TV series, and she's still looking forward to this. I imagine that the studio is more concerned with any negative associations with the legendarily appalling big screen remake of a decade or so ago, rather than the classic show that inspired it. That being said, I agree with you that no one is likely to confuse the two. I also think/hope that the title hasn't been altered, for the reasons I stated in my earlier comment.

I think this is a similar situation to last year's Fast & Furious 5 debacle! The film was called Fast Five, released in the States as such, classified by the BBFC as such and when the film played, that was the title that appeared on screen. However, Universal made the choice to push it's publicity with "Fast & Furious 5". This was due to test screenings where dumb people didn't realise that Fast Five was part of the F&F franchise (yeah, really dumb people!) and so the marketing campaign was adjusted with a name change, so that cinema goers would have no doubt in their minds that this was part of the Fast & Furious series. Disney are obviously going to great lengths to distance themselves from the appauling 1998 film based on the classic TV series. Now most people know the difference, but clearly someone, somewhere in some test screening has said "Where's Steed and Ms Peel?" or some such nonsense and the execs have had a brain-fart and the publicity will now reflect this. I'm willing to bet that when the BBFC card comes up and the credits roll, it will still be Marvel's The Avengers ... but the (awful photoshopped) posters and campaign will push it as Marvel Avengers Assemble ... which I think is just confusing and ridiculous ... this film has had four years and five films to push and promote it, but clearly some people out there are not aware and this campaign is aimed at them, not people like us who are totally sold on the project already ... you know The Geeks :-)
