Ben Affleck to direct Justice League movie?

Warner have their eye on the Argo director…

Read our thoughts on what Warner Brothers needs to do before they start shooting The Justice League movie

With Marvel having just announced that Joss Whedon is in place to write and direct The Avengers 2, Warner Bros. seem to be readying a counter-punch, with Variety reporting that the studio are considering Ben Affleck to direct a Justice League movie.

The news comes in the wake of Christopher Nolan ruling himself out of the running, with the director clarifying his position at a recent junket for The Dark Knight Rises. "I've got no plans to do anything more," he said of his work on Batman, "and certainly no involvement with any Justice League project."

Variety reports that Affleck's work on Warner's commercially successful The Town has seen his stock rise within the studio, to the point that he is seen as a safe pair of hands in which to place responsibility for prime properties. And a Justice League movie would be the primest of the prime…

The project would see a superhero team-up between the likes of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, and would be seen as a worthy rival to Marvel's stable of Earth-avenging badasses.

Affleck was thought to be in contention for Zack Snyder's Man Of Steelat one point, but it seems as though an even bigger prize may now be within his reach. No release date has been confirmed as yet, but it's thought Warner will attempt to deliver the film in 2015, just in time for a head to head with The Avengers...

Would Affleck be a good choice to direct the Justice League? Tell us, below!

Given Affleck's leaning towards grit, this might not be the spandez campfest we were all expecting...

Ah writerdave, nice to see you back.. I thought the Town was a cracking movie. DC might be going down the grittier route, they definitely need to do something different otherwise they'll end up with a (not so) cheap Marvel ripoff ala Green Lantern.

I hope Affleck continues directing films in the mode of his first two and stays away from this major cash-in. Do we really need a Justice League Movie? I mean Man Of Steel is not even out yet and casting another Batman anytime soon would be applying an exceeding amount of pressure to whoever steps into the role.

@Writerdave, good to see you again, we all thought you and Dalidab had run off into the sunset together. I agree, DC have to go down the gritty road. Marvel have some grit but also alot of camp in their movies, which is fine and alot of fun, but i think some of the DC charactrs lend themselves better for grittier movies.

The new Batman? That will be some shoes to fill. New Green Lantern? Not so much...

Let's not forget, like Nolan, Singer, Whedon and Burton (who have all made great comic book movies), Affleck is a huge comic fan. Regardless of what you may think of him as an actor, he has written and directed some great movies; I'm sure he'll also get some input from his friends, Kevin Smith et al. who have written for DC Comics. With all this in mind, I would expect a pretty decent JL movie from Affleck.

While a big fan of Nolan's Batman, and with high hopes for The Man of Steel, and even beginning to trust Affleck again, I am still wondering whether we do actually need a Justice League movie... For some reason, DC superheroes just don't do it for me (Only Batman, and Superman to a much lesser extent). I just prefer Marvel's superheroes and I have liked most of the movies based on Marvel's main properties - can't say the same for DC. I have no idea how Wonder Woman would translate to the big screen, and how the alien might of Superman would fit in next to the decidedly human Batman. The Avengers got away with it by simply being a balls-out action fest, but I wonder if this would be enough for the Justice League. Maybe they would need a much smarter, much more subtle movie. Perhaps even introduce Batman as a mysterious background character without announcing who is behind the cowel - and let him remain faceless for the duratio of the movie. Therefore, if the movie fails, whoever plays Batman may not have to suffer too much criticism. Alternatively, if the movie is a success and the new Batman praised, then there is a platform to launch a new Batman series without having to retell the same old origin story. Either way, I think a Justice League movie will have to be something pretty surprising to be hailed a success...

Thanks for the welcome guys, apologies for my absence but I've been lying low for a while after taking a trip to Wakefield to remove a certain... problem. It was originally going to be a much quicker job but unfortunately I couldn't fit his head into the wood chipper ;)

This news has raised my hope for a decent movie but I just can't see it working, The Avengers was succesful because Marvel invested alot of time and money into getting off the ground, they used over solo outings to build the roots for it. Wonder Woman still has no movie, The Green Lantern flopped, Batman was a giant success but that version wouldn't fit into to teaming up with a Martian. I just hope WB at least have the common sense to use Henry Cavil for Superman.

As for a new Batman/Bruce Wayne my pick would be Ryan Gosling, he's a star but also as the acting chops to boot.

As far as I'm concerned Affleck is a far superior director than an actor (although on form in The Town) and I think this would be very interesting and dark if he took the helm. Quite intrigued.

As much as I like Fassbender I just can't picture a ginger Bruce Wayne, if anything he'd make a good Flash.
