Benedict Cumberbatch is Julian Assange in first trailer for The Fifth Estate: watch now

“Truth, justice… the American way”

The first trailer has arrived online for WikiLeaks movie The Fifth Estate, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the infamous Julian Assange.

The film follows the early days of the information leaking website, as Assange begins by exposing corrupt bankers before moving on to the more thorny issue of national security.

The assembled cast is impressively starry, but it’s Cumberbatch who steals the show here, capturing Assange’s magnetic and frequently unnerving presence down to a tee.

Take a look at the first trailer, below…

As far as we can tell from this first trailer, the controversy that has dogged Assange’s personal life has been neatly skirted by the film, although it does seem conscious to pose the question as to the morality of the site itself.

Directed by Bill Condon and co-starring Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie and Stanley Tucci, The Fifth Estate will open in the UK on 1 January 2014.

What do you think of the new trailer? Tell us, below!

As an Aussie I have to say that Mr Cumberbatch does a really impressive Aussie accent, something even Ms Streep couldn't pull off.
