Billy Crystal spills details on Monsters University

Actor likens it to Revenge Of The Nerds

Billy Crystal has dropped a few tantalising details about Pixar’s upcoming prequel Monsters University, hinting it involves elements of Revenge Of The Nerds.

Talking with Entertainment Weekly, the actor – who returns to voice one-eyed monster Mike – revealed that Mike and Sully are 17 and 18 in the prequel.

“They end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition – like Greek Games in college,” he says.

“They have to mobilise a group, sort of like Revenge Of The Nerds monsters, and get them ready to be scary.”

Not only that, but Mike “has a retainer”, Crystal says. Because of course he does.

After the release of the prequel’s gigglesome teaser trailer earlier this year, we’re more excited about the return of Mike, Sully and co than ever – and these new details make the prequel sound frankly awesome.

This sounds boring, I just can't understand why they've gone with a prequel for this.

I personally think Pixar are struggling to think of new ideas. I don't think Monsters Inc. needs a prequel, it works perfectly as a stand alone movie. There are rumours that Finding Nemo is getting a sequel, again another film that should just stay as a stand alone film.

Too many sequels after the good but not great Brave. Im sure MU will be good, but is good enough from Pixar?

To be fair Toy Story works perfectly as a stand alone film yet we got two amazing sequels from that franchise, they weren't needed but they were great anyway. Maybe we should give it a chance? I mean come on Mike and Sully at uni. If done right this could be great much better than if they did a sequel instead. I agree that Finding Nemo should be left alone but I'm pretty sure they are forced to make sequels by Disney, I know they were forced to make Toy Story 2.

Why oh Why,,, what's happened to Pixar? They really do seem to be struggling to come up with original idea's. This sounds dreadful and boring. I loved Monster inc but nobody ever wanted a Sequel to this let alone a Prequel with the two leads in college. After a sequel to the awful Cars and now I hear a sequel to Finding Nemo is in the works,,, (How does that even work? does he get lost again??) things seem to be going from bad to worse,, Brave was only average in my opinion too,, Dreamworks How to train your dragon was far far superior.

I also think Pixar should let themselves be very experimental for a few years, try to gain an edge again before they become too mushy. or they could form another independent studio. it would also be good for other studios to gain a stronger footing (eg dreamworks) and brew some competition. Despite the advances in 3d most cg animation and special effects have hardly developed since 2010 technically or conceptually. i think everyone is getting disillusioned with reboots sequels remakes etc.

I figured out the sequel to Finding Nemo- No real driving plot, just Nemo (and maybe Dory) swimming around in the ocean, meeting some old friends, meeting lots of new people, having adventures, just... living, man. And then in the end, it turns out what Nemo was finding was- himself. It'll be called Refinding Nemo. It will be glorious, man.
