Bourne Legacy will be a “stand-alone project”

Jason Bourne not in the fourth Bourne film

Tony Gilroy

Bourne Legacy, the fourth instalment in the fist-bruising Bourne film franchise, was officially announced last week with the confirmation that screenwriter Tony Gilroy will be directing.

But rumours that Matt Damon will return for more conspiratorial jaw-busting have been swiftly squashed by Gilroy, who has revealed that this new film “is a stand-alone project”.

“It’s a completely original screenplay,” he says. “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter… this is a stand-alone project.”

Huh. So where do we go from here, then? Without Damon or Bourne, it’s arguable why a new film that doesn’t feature either would need the ‘Bourne’ part of the title (aside from a cynical merchandising stand-point).

Gilroy elaborates by explaining that even if Bourne isn’t present, Legacy will be very much set in his world – the world we know from Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” he explains. “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy.

“Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas.

“When you see what we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious… but Jason Bourne’s activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.”

Bad idea? Or possibly brilliant expansion of a fascinating universe? Speak below...

In cinemas this week…

I have mixed feelings about this. The trilogy is done and dusted, the story closed off so therefore bringing Bourne back for another film is pointless however if the movie is a 'stand alone' spin-off then at least if it's c**p it doesn't taint what has gone before.

Hmmm so they arent re-casting the role of Bourne. Bourne wont be in the film and yet its called Bourne Legacy? Why not just call the film "Other Customers who liked Bourne bought this"?

By the sounds of it, they're implying that Bourne's breakdown, amnesia and actions have had long lasting ramifications in the agency and probably for spooks across the globe. Meaning that this film will probably deal with Pamela Landy's decision to give him the address of the training facility, Noah Vosen's decisions and his imprisonment, and Nicky Parsons going AWOL, possibly being hunted down as well now.

This sounds ridiculous. The Bourne films are the finest action films of the past decade or so and Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are the reasons. Cannot see this film working or me going to see it. Bad Idea

I think the clue is in the title as a legacy is something you tend to leave behind not chat about down the pub or chase over rooftops in Morocco. To me it sounds quite interesting unlike the thing or alien prequels which feel like someone trying to cash in.

Noooooooo, no Matt Damon....wtf? Cynical ploy to milk the Bourne name for as much as they can. The trilogy were some of the best action movies ever, action with brains and brilliant actors. Will not be going to this, will wait 'til it appears on Sky Movies and maybe watch it then...maybe...
