Brokeback Mountain: The Opera?

The cowboy drama gets a tuneful adaptation…

It’s common these days for movies to become musicals. Some (such as Hairspray) even go so far as to become movie musicals based on musicals that were based on movies.

But opera? That’s a new one. As it turns out, The New York City Opera is planning to turn Brokeback Mountain – or at least the Annie Prolux short story that also inspired Ang Lee’s film – into an all-singing extravaganza.

According to Playbill’s story, the only catch for fans is that composer Charles Wuorinen hasn’t started it yet, and it won’t hit the stage until 2013. Now, what rhymes with “I just can’t quit you”?
