Buried treasure

Evan Rachel Wood and Michael Douglas are a daddy-daughter team hunting for riches in King Of California

If, by looking at the title King Of California, you’re expecting another gritty crime tale from the makers of King Of New York, then we’re afraid this isn’t your day.

If, however, you’re after a weird comedy starring Evan Rachel Wood and Michael Douglas, then you’re in luck. King Of California has Douglas playing an eccentric, unstable father who convinces his daughter that there’s Spanish gold buried under the local Wal-Mart hypermarket. With their roles swapping places - she’ll have to be the responsible one now that daddy has clearly gone cuckoo - it only serves to bring them closer together. This sounds like Douglas returning to Wonder Boys territory - which can only be a good thing.

Prize-winning novelist Michael Cahill is the man calling the shots, and his directorial debut kicks off in May.
