Cannes 2011: Monsters sequel on the way

What's that coming over the hill..?

Monsters, the micro-budget breakout that wowed the industry with its intimate story and home-computer rendered CGI, has been tapped for a sequel.

The film will follow a 'Heart of Darkness' tale of two brothers trying to find each other in a walled city.

Commercial Directors Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas will direct, with producer Allan Niblo promising to 'keep the quality and intelligence of the first film and make it much more of a genre pic.'

He added "Monsters 2 will expand the world created in the original whilst upping the action ante."

The sequel is expected to introduce a wider variety of aliens than seen in the original.

Gareth Edwards, the Brit-director responsible for the original will serve as executive producer, along with lead actor Scoot McNairy.

With a budget under $5 million, the pic is expected to shoot in September in South America.

Gareth Edwards will next be directing a big-budget Godzilla reboot.

Like a bit of Monsters? Think they should leave it alone? Let us know!

I just don't get it. A sequel? Why? The first film promised so much, yet delivered nothing except the odd beautiful scenery shot. It was devoid of likeable characters - let alone any chemistry. Dull, dull, pretentious dullness. Even allowing for differences in taste I just can't fathom anyone enjoying the first film - surely a case of the Emperors New Clothes.

Black5quirrel: so it wasn't your thing? has the concept of subtlety given you a wide berth? Monsters is a superb little film, playing to it's budget constraints and story strengths. It's gorgeously shot and wonderfully paced... but you wanted more aliens, right? more aliens killing folks... yeah... and blood! s**t loads of blood... and, and maybe some boobs, and a chick who gets her head ripped off... yeeeeah! ok, i know i'm being an a*s, and that dig isn't fully aimed at you, more the meathead cinemagoers who can't handle a slightly slower pace and a lack of blud'n'gutz... it's a real shame, because Monsters is the perfect anti-monster movie, refusing to submit to genre cliches and overstylised violence. Making a sequel a 'genre pic' and 'upping the action ante' should keep many happy, but for me it's kind of rubbing against the true nature of the original. Like Cloverfield, a sequel is unnecessary. As stand alone slices of cinema they're both borderline sublime efforts. Make a sequel? Just make a different f*****g film... no? hollywood refuses to allow anything truly original? damn shame. Rant over.....
