Casting news from The Thing prequel

Norse to meet you...

Authenticity seems to be the order of the day on the set of The Thing prequel.

Anyone worried by the thought of Norwegian scientists being played by a bunch of American actors saying 'ja' may breathe a sigh of relief - the latest casting news from Matthijs van Heijningen Jr's project suggests there may well be some actual Norwegians involved.

The 13th Warrior’s Dennis Storhoi, The Frost’s Trond Espen Seim and Svik’s Jordan Langhelle are all onboard along with Stig Henrik Hoff, Jan Gunnar Roise, Kristofer Hivju and Jo Adrian Haavind. For the record,  spell check now hates us.

It was revealed a few weeks ago that the film would star Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. Rumours of Winstead’s Scandinavian heritage are as yet unconfirmed.

Screenwriter Ronald Moore has described the movie as a companion piece to John Carpenter's film rather than a remake, and has said that the prequel will tell the story of the Norwegian crew that uncovered the alien.

The plot will run right up to the beginning of the 1982 version, ending just before the Thing makes contact with R.J MacCready (Kurt Russell) and co at the American station.

Rumourmill chatter also abounds that van Heijningen Jr wants to link the two films by making MacCready's brother the focus of the movie.

If it has to happen, it's good to hear things (pun intended) are going down this way. Sort of. Add Norge lingo with English subtitles and I'll be 0.23% more convinced. We've seen what the Thing is capable of - the only way (for me) to spin a new angle on 'the fear' is being two steps behind a foreign language as all hell is kicking loose. But Mac's brother? Give it a rest. This one is already on thin ice (pun intended) without a borderline-impossible-to-sell-to-thinking-audience 'convenience' like this. I don't buy it, not in the least, and for me it it suggests a worrying timbre for this picture, if the writers think this is a good idea.

Now im very excited about the idea of this. Then again i was very excited about Episode 1... The Thing is my all time favourite horror film and the game on PS2, described as a true sequel by John Carpenter no less, was brilliant even if it did go all conspiracy towards the end. I just hope they dont make too many links to the first film, make it like its a completely new idea without all the fan service that gets input these days (See Episode 1).

Hmmm ho hum with the Mary Elizabeth Wanstead casting but at least they seem to be going for some authentic casting with the Scandinavians. I just hope there doesn't happen to be a large group of good looking Americans visiting the south pole at just the wrong time....They should take a look at Ola Rapace who played Stefan in the Swedish version of Wallander. Cracking actor and looks like he could do "unhinged" fairly easily.

This is all starting to sound good. The Thing is one of my all time favourites. Every time I watch it I'm still amazed at how good the animatronic fx was. I've seen so many films ruined by bad/unconvincing CGI of late and I worry that's what will happen here.

The most important thing is that metalgatesolid managed to get through that entire post without mentioning the Ninja Turtles. I'm so proud of you.
