Robin Hood co-star Mark Strong has been proved right – Cate Blanchett has officially agreed to play Maid Marian opposite Russell Crowe.
Variety also reports that while the film has changed names from Nottingham to Robin Hood, that might not be the final title.
Strong dropped Blanchett’s name a while ago, and the most recent reports have had her listed as part of the cast, though she hadn’t locked down a deal.
"They are both highly accomplished dramatic actors who are taken seriously playing rich characters in period pieces, but each has the ability to show you fun," says producer Brian Grazer.
With $130 million to spend (that’ll buy a lot of Lincoln green), Scott will start shooting in April from a script re-written into a Gladiator-style tale by Brian Helgeland.
It’ll stick close to historical fact – about the period, if not the man – and finds Robin of Loxley as an abandoned child who finds a home with Nottingham’s poor.
Following his time in the crusades, he returns to England to help fight for them against a corrupt overclass. Unable to properly fall in love thanks to abandonment issues, he overcomes that when he meets Marion.
And let’s face it - who wouldn’t?
Part of us is still holding out hope that this could turn into a big screen version of Maid Marian And Her Merry Men. Where’s Tony Robinson when you need him?
Does the world need another tale from the Hood? Sound off…
