Charlton Heston RIP

The Planet Of The Apes star is dead at 84…

Cinema has lost one of its true great originals: Charlton Heston died on Saturday at the age of 84.

An Oscar-winning star of such films as Ben-Hur, the original Planet Of The Apes, The Ten Commandments and Touch Of Evil, Heston was also a civil rights campaigner in the '50s and '60s, marching for Martin Luther King. In 2003, Heston was awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the U.S.

He was also the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1965-1971, and chairman of the American Film Institute. Despite many of his later roles being cameos, Heston remained a towering presence in American cinema. He will be missed.
