China remakes Cellular

The Chris Evans thriller gets an Asian makeover

Call it remake revenge. After years of Hollywood plundering the supplies of Asian thrillers and horror films as a cheap source of film fodder, China (with the aid of Warner Bros) is striking back with a remake of Cellular.

You’ll remember the 2004 phone-focused thriller starred Kim Basinger as a woman kidnapped by nasty Jason Statham who manages to contact Chris Evans and beg him to help her. There’s no word on who will star in the Chinese version – retitled Connected – but Benny Chan is ready to shoot it in Hong Kong.

It’s not the first time another country has remade a US film – Italy’s È già ieri is, after all, a rough retread of Groundhog Day. Head to Variety’s story for more details on Connected.

Hint: The film starred Michael J Fox as accidental time traveller Marty McFly.
