Chris Pine confirmed for Jack Ryan

Movie still in very early stages though

Current Captain Kirk Chris Pine has long been mooted as the man to take over the role of Jack Ryan.

This has now been confirmed by producer Mace Neufeld, who also claimed that this Ryan flick would be based on an original script rather than a Clancy novel.

Neufeld said of the plot: "We pick him up on Wall Street. But I'm not going to tell you the rest of the story... The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers'".

So the current economic crisis may be an influence on this one then. But don't expect it in a hurry, as the producers are still waiting on a script.

Pine is one of a long line of actors taking on the role, following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck.

Well Ryan made his money in Wall Street back in the day, so this could be a... pre-prequel? And Chris Pine is young enough to pull off that era, but not old enough for let's say "Debt of honour" (which I would love to see as a movie, although a lot of people would be upset with it). There's always Ryan Jr if this scenario falls apart! :)

i have enjoyed all the ryan films with the exception of patriot games and also thought Ben Affleck was very good in the last one so it's a shame they have not stuck with him. No problem with it being Chris Pine though but I will leave my decision whether to see this at the cinema or on dvd down to the trailer and reviews.

I think Pine will do a decent jon as Jack Ryan. However, I am not very happy about using a script independent from any of the novels. There are so many good Jack Ryan novels and I feel that the film industry has only scratched the surface of the material Tom Clancy has provided. Personally, I would love to see a John Clark book written for the screen. He is a key character in the Jack Ryan novels/films (Willem Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger, and Liev Schreiber in Sum of all fears.) He ultimately becomes the leaader of Rainbow Six. Without Remorse would be an amazing addition to the "Clancy" movies. To me, the book has become the quintessential tale of revenge.
