Paramount must want to keep Captain Kirk close - the studio is negotiating with Chris Pine to take over the Jack Ryan franchise.
Yes, Tom Clancy's CIA analyst-turned-action hero, who has in the past been played by Alex Baldwin, Harrison Ford (below) and Ben Affleck, is still a hot property for Paramount.
And the most recent talk has been of making the character even younger than Affleck played him in the hopes of launching a new continuing franchise.
While Sam Raimi was involved at one point, the current overseers are producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufield, with Hossein Amini having written the most recent script.
There's no info on what the plot will be about, but it will almost certainly focus on a fresh-faced Ryan tackling one of his earliest missions.
Pine proved he had the charisma with Kirk, and Paramount will no doubt be hoping that if it secures him to this and other projects (like the counterfeiting drama it announced yesterday) that it'll mean he'll be available for more time at the helm of the Enterprise…
